Idabel is the county seat of McCurtain county on the Frisco
Railroad in the center of the county east and west and a little be-
low the center north and south It is eight miles north of Red
River and 3 miles south of Little Rivqr The bottom land of Red
River is four miles wide and the richest land in the world
There is a string of lakes a few miles north of the River
which used to be the old river bed This section is the finest
corn cane and cotton land in the world
It has won the state prize twice for the best corn yeild in
the state of Oklahoma Some ears weighed 2 1-2 each that
would shellout over three bushels to the hundred ears
Red River bottom is covered with a valuable growth of Cane
Ash Walnut Cotton Wood white Oak Hickory and Hois’d arc
The soil is varied from deep red Joam to black waxy to'red waxy
The lakes are clear and deep they are literally teeming with fish
huge buffalo immense yellow- cat channel cat and perch of all
iknds
This section rarely ever over lllows not oftener than once in
ten or twelve years and then it is back water and leaves a sedi-
ment on the land thereby enriching it The over flow always
recedes in time to allow the farmers to get in a crop
Two of the largest farms in this section belong to Dr De
Berry of Idabel One of these farms is about 800 acres another
is about 000 acres According to tradition a small part of one of
these fields was cleared by a band of Shawnee Indians over
seventy five years ago"' It has' been in cultivation ever since and
still produces three fourths of a bale of cotton per acre
The Little River bottom to the ‘north of Idabel is equally as
good as Red River bottom but is narrower Both of the rivers
to the North and South of us are supplied with good safe ferries
so that it is easy for the farmers from the hills in the North to
get in to Idabel as well as the farmers from Texas Idabel
draws trade from all over McCurtain county as well as a good
part of Texas
The crops this year are better in the bottom lands and in
the hills than they are in the country in the immediate vicinity
of Idabel t
The stranger in our town is invited to take a walk along our
switches and see the immense piles of ties posts and the huge
white oak and walnut logs ready for shipping and visit the stave
factory on Little River and the spoke and felloe factory in town'

census its population is between 2000 and 21300 It has three
banks one spoke and felloe factory' five hotels five or
six restaurants boarding houses galore and five well
equipped livery stables Idabel has a number of blacksmith
shops that are prepared to do all kinds of blacksmith and wood

newspapers one semi-weekly newspaper all’ with modern up to
date presses Idabel has several attorneys of state wide repu-
tations and the whole bar is composed of able' clean gentlemen
who are anxious to preserve the integrity of the profession
