SEVENTEEN-YEAR LOCUST DUE
Thirteen-Year Brood Expected to Ap-
pear In Lower Half of tho
Mississippi Valley
(By C L MARLATT)
Two important broods of the pe-
riodical cicada — the 13-year and 17-
year locust — are duo to appead during
1911 In different parts of the United
States
One of these the 17-year-race ex-
tends from New Vork southward Into
North Carolina in general lying east
of the Allegheny mountains The 13-
year race covers the lower half of tb
Mississippi valley
Both of these broods have been
very carefully studied in past years
and their distribution has been in the
main probably accurately deter-
mined The approaching reappear-
ance however of these broods of
cicada has led to Inquiries and cir-
culars have been issued by the gov-
ernment and also the experiment sta-
tions of various states to meet these
inquiries and also for the purpose of
securing reports of occurrence to add
to tile present knowledge of the dis-
tribution of these broods
The 17-year is one of the best
recorded brood3 since its almost ex-
iluslvcly e?3tern range brings it into
tho Immediate vicinity of the larger
towns and more populated districts of
the Atlantic coast It has been re-
ported in Connecticut regularly every
17 jears since 1724 and in New Jersey
since 1775 and almost equally long
records of its regular visits in other
states have been made! Its last ap-
pearance was in 1S94 although a scat-
tering brood appeared in 1910
According to a circular of warning
ircucd by the New Jersey experiment
station these insects will appear dur-
ing the last days of May 1911 and
will continue throughout June dis-
appearing by the end of the month
The injury is done by the females in
a ing the eggs in twigs and small
branches making slits that do not
heal These result in the ultimate
death beyond the point of injury of
every punctured branch less than one-
half ai inch in diameter and where
thee are many punctures on the
trunks of small trees or on branches
up to three-quarter Inch these gro Spi
toJbe seriously injured or killed
Pigeon Is Monogamous
The pigeon Is strictly monogamoo
selecting a mate and displaying
marital constancy that might well be
emulated by featherless and presum-
ably bipeds The female lays her first
eggs when six months old depositing
two in the nest snd then settling
down to hatching The period of in-
cubation is 18 days The male bird
sharing the labor with the female
The young birds consist of little but
appetite bo that both father and
mother are kept busy feeding the
hungry pair of youngsters
