Think On These Things
by Joyce Hifler
Few people escape trauma in
their lifetime. It is only when
we close ourselves in with it
that we lose control. It takes
time and understanding to fi-
nally overcome the suppressing,
demanding, effects of deep
hurt.
Most people can't talk freely
about what has hurt them -- or
to the extreme, they talk too
much. Talking too little is be-
ing trapped inside with no
vents. But telling and retelling
snags us on one spot like a leaf
caught in a whirlpool.
We make tremendous progress
when we write down every-
thing we can remember about a
problem and the circumstances
that surround it. It is often the
outlying circumstances that we
have not faced. Writing it in a
private book takes it out of our
deepest feelings and puts it
somewhere away from us.
Every entry in the book lifts a
part of the burden -- until
eventually we can handle it on
the inner and the outer. It is
knowing oneself and liking who
we are.
