DEAR DR LAMB - I
read this article which I am
sending you about how Eliz-
abeth Taylor lost eight
pounds in one week and con-
tinued to lose until she
quickly regained her former
beauty for her stage appear-
ance in “The Little Foxes ”
Is it possible to do that?
Would it be all right for
me to follow that 600-calo-
rie-a-day diet she was on? I
don’t want to be on Broad-
way or in the movies but I
would like to star in my
husband’s life again I need
to lose about 20 pounds.
DEAR READER - With
that attitude I’ll bet you are
already starring in your
husband's life. Yes, you can
lose weight the same way
but I want to point out a few
things to you. Elizabeth Tay-
lor followed that 600-calorie
diet for only one week I
don't really like diets to be
M. K. I 0. LINES

that low in calories and cer-
tainly a week is long enough
for that kind of calorie
restriction If a person is
healthy, a week isn’t going
to be a disaster but it is not
the thing you should do with-
out knowing that it can be a
strain on your health.
Notice also, as the story
pointed out, that she lost
eight pounds the first week,
but she only lost five pounds
in the following month. That
initial weight loss, particu-
larly on a low-salt diet
which she had, is largely
water loss That happens
with almost everyone who
goes on a strict diet.
It doesn’t last. But she
probably did lose a total of
13 pounds in a little over a
month, if the story is accu-
rate. That is about a third of
a pound a day which is a lit-
tle fast but still reasonable
Also note that she walked
an hour a day to start her
program and evidently con-
tinued her exercise during
the following month. That is
an important part of helping
people lose weight So don’t
just go on a diet, but walk
and exercise, too.

Since you don’t have to
lose your 20 pounds quickly
to go on Broadway, do it
gradually, safely and learn
how to follow a program
that will last for you. Why be
a queen for a day when you
can follow a sensible pro-
gram and be a queen every
day for the rest of your life.
DEAR DR. LAMB - I’m
80 and concerned about my
lips, which seem to be dry
all the time, especially in the
morning. During the day the
skin around my lips gets
flaky which I can peel off in
bits. I keep a container of
water in my bedroom to
moisten the air but that
hasn’t helped Is this an
allergy or a symptom? My
blood pressure is normal and
I’m seemingly healthy
DEAR READER - It is
important to maintain ade-
quate humidity in the house
but the most important
moisture comes from your
own body. Moisturizers work
because they prevent the
evaporation of body mois-
ture.
The most effective mois-
turizers are the salve prepa-
rations that provide a thick
oily film over the surface of
the skin The best known
example of these is common
Vaseline. It works better
than many expensive skin
lotions Just spread it over
your lips and around your
mouth each night before you
go to bed That should help
Also you can add some after
you have washed your face
You can wipe off the excess
during the day if you wish,
but wait until it has had a
chance to penetrate the
surface
DEAR DR. LAMB - I
want to get back in shape
and improve my fitness I
have not been doing any-
thing for years. I’m 56 years
old and a little overweight.
I had planned to start a
walking program Now my

neighbor tells me that walk-
ing will not help my circula-
tion and I really have to jog.
He is something of an expert
on this subject and says you
have to increase your heart
rate to 60 or 80 percent of its
maximum or around 140
beats a minute to do any
good.
Now I am wondering if he
is right and I won’t get any
health benefits from walk-
ing I surely won’t have a
heart rate that high with
walking alone and I'm not so
sure it would be good for me
to do that much exercise.
What do you think’ Will the
walking be such a low level
of exertion that it can’t help
me?
DEAR READER - Stuff
and nonsense. Let your
neighbor keep his rigid
rules, start your walking
program. And I think you
should limit your walking
speed to the point that you
don't get a high heart rate,
particularly at first.
Of course you can get ben-
efits for your circulation
from a walking program.
Such rules as having to have
a high heart rate are terrible
oversimplifications that do
not apply to everybody. If
you had been at bed rest for
four weeks, just starting
walking down the hall is a
training step. Each time you
increase your exercise
above the level you are
already adapted to, it is a
training experience if you
were already trained for the
Boston Marathon, a walk
wouldn't raise your fitness
level much, but for most
people who have not been
that active it is a wonderful
way to start and even main-
tain a good level of fitness
I am sending you The
Health Letter number 18-4,
Walking to Health, which
will tell you how to do it and
the benefits you can derive
from it for your health. Oth-
ers who want this issue can
send 75 cents with a long,
stamped, self-addressed
envelope for it to me, in care
of this newspaper, P.O. Box

Walking can train your
heart and as you increase
your distance and speed it
will train it to a higher
exercise level It can help to
lower blood pressure, cho-
lesterol and to keep your
weight down.
