Organ recital in
B’ville to feature
Handel and Bach
Organist John Balka of Oklahoma City, appearing in recital
at St I uke’s Episcopal church, Bartlesville, Sunday, December
15 at 8 pm, will play a varied program comprising classical
organ works of masters such as Handel and Bach as well as
those of contemporaries such as Hugo Distler Anyone in-
terested in music is welcome to attend and the recital is free
Balka is organist-choirmaster of Christ the King Catholic
church. Oklahoma City
While better known for such beloved oratories as "The
Messiah," G. F Handel also was an outstanding organist of his
century and composed extensively for this instrument The
Concerto in F Major (Allegro Moderato) is one of his best works
and with it Balka will open his recital at the 56-rank organ of St
Luke’s church
J S Bach, history's greatest organ composer and its master
of counterpoint, wrote many fugue and chorale preludes, the
latter based on the stately inspiring humn tunes of his day
Mr Balka will follow the "Fugue in D Major" with two of
Bach's advent chorales. "Nun Komm. der Heiden Heiland"
(Come Now, Savior of the Heathen) and "Wachet Auf. Ruft Uns
die Stimme" (Wake, Awake, for Night Is Flying), both telling of
the coming of Christ, the first one of the most beautiful that
Bach wrote in this form, the second in trio form based on the
familiar chorale and hymn, “Wake, Awake for Night Is Flying."
Moving into the Christmastide, Mr Balka will then play the
“Carol Prelude" on the familiar theme Greensleeves" by the
modern composer Richard Purvis. This lovely air has been
abused by excessive, indiscriminate playing; Purvis gives it a
refreshing form to recapture its traditional beauty
Mr Balka’s finale will be the brilliant, highly virtuosic and
invigorating Finale (Toccato)" from the Organ Symphony No
5 of Charles Marie Widor, one of France's greatest organ
composers and teachers, with whom the great
missionary musician, Albert Schweitzer, studied So often
played that it has become known as a "work horse" among
musicians, the work will be rendered by Mr Balka so as to
revive the true color of this composition through technical skill
that the work demands
