BROKEN HUMANITY and SICK SOCIETY
Romans 1:29-32
Humanity has been a broken humanity since that day long ago
when Adam and Eve were driven from paradise because they be-
lieved Satan and disobeyed God. They experienced the true nature
of sin; sorrow, suffering, and death.
Evidences of broken humanity are everywhere. Institutions de-
signed to minister to broken bodies and minds dot the earth. Innum-
erable cities of the dead receive their portion of silent citizens
daily. Institutions designed to punish evil-doers are filled to over-
flowing.
Society today is a sick society, portions of it very sick. Soc-
ieties are composed of people. When the people composing them
are sick, the societies are sick.
Youth, middle age, and old age alike share insecurity and unrest.
Wars rumors of wars, lawlessness, insurrections, unrest, despair,
wickedness of every description-these are the daily fare served by
newspapers, radio, and television. Paul’s words in our text,
Romans 1:29.32, well characterize at least a sizable portion of our
society.
Institutions once honored are often ignored, or even ridiculed.
For too many, marriage is no longer sacred; the home is only an
experiment, to be broken at the whim of husband or wife, often with-
our regard for the welfare of the children who are part of it. Law
and order, once the strength of society ,are disregarded and flaunt-
ed. Injustices abound. Corruption in high places is almost common.
All these are symptoms of a sick and ailing society. It is our con-
viction that the only hope for the world is Jesus. The only one who
can heal sick society is the Great Physician. He would heal soc-
iety by healing the men who compose it, making each one a new
creature with new outlooks, new hopes and aspirations, new goals
for life, new relations. But even the Great Physician cannot heal
broken humanity or cure a sick society that does not recognize its
need and become willing to accept His remedy.
0 God, in a world where our witness is often ignored, help us to
be true to our commitment. When we are ridiculed, help us to be
courageous. When we are seemingly ineffective, help us to be per-
sistent. Help us to be truly the salt of the earth and the light of
the world, that men may be saved and travel the path that leads to
Thee. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
