A Navy Chaplain Is Bitter,
Replies to Viet War Critics
By RAY CROMLEY
NEA Washington Correspondent
WASHINGTON (NEA)
One thing that deeply bothers GIs back from Vietnam is the
cynical attitude of some Americans toward what they’ve
risked their lives to accomplish.
Typical is the thinking of a Navy chaplain who writes:
"I spent eight months in the combat zone with a group of
men who literally worked themselves to death on humanitar-
ian projects. We built roads, a hospital, dug water wells and
did countless acts of civic improvement, such as working with

“I’m sick to death of battlefield experts who have never
left home, and of mushy Christians who have never been to an
area where to believe in Christ means torture and death . . .

North Vietnam, and I’ll talk with them.
“May God have mercy on these political and military ex-
perts who debate in a classroom and never get more than a
hundred miles from home. May God have mercy on us all for
condemning so easily and commending so slowly . . .
“What frightens me is that our people are not getting a good
and true picture of the Vietnamese conflict, even though I’m
sure it is the best-covered news event in history. When I tell
people . . . that the Communists . . . savagely blew up our
hospital and maimed our men with ambushes, no one wants
to listen ...
“I hear continued criticism of our presence in Asia and con-
tinual harping to withdraw . . . Why isn’t there more con-
demnation of the raping, looting, burning and the hell the
Communists are spreading south of the demilitarized zone?
“When I tell folks back here about the work the boys are
doing there—building, teaching, healing and cleaning—I get
a sweet smile, a knowing look, and a reply something like
this: 'Oh, yes, it is wonderful what our boys are doing. But
don’t you think these people are just taking advantage of us,
and they really aren’t in favor of us being there, and wouldn’t
they be just as happy and well off under the Communists?’
“The first several times I heard this, I was too surprised to
reply. Then I was too mad to talk. Now I want to go into a
corner and weep!
“How stupid can we get?
“There is no doubt in my mind that this is the “Good-
Samaritan Farable War’! We’ve got bruised and bleeding
South Vietnamese desperately in need of help. And a lot of
Americans fear getting involved by stopping to help. The
thing that breaks my heart is that, having been one of the
many who did stop and try to help a little, I straighten up and
turn around, looking for our church to help—and I don't find
it! What's wrong with being on the side of freedom?
"I think the thing that burns the soul of every soldier is to
come home and hear some . . . comfortable (man) . . . de-
nounce our country’s policy, and spout off about a war . . .
he has no first-hand knowledge of.”
More people ought to be saying “well-done” to the men we
send to Vietnam.

Pd. Adv.
The baptism of John was the mood, the spirit, the very
act of repentance and fitted and prepared one for the
coming rule of God. Repentance in John’s preaching, was
a complete, overall change, as in all repentance. If it
isn’t a complete overall change, it isn’t repentance. There
cannot be partial repentance anymore than there can be
partial truth. Repentance demands a complete about face,
a new mind and a new will turned into a new direction.
Thus repentance is always more than just saying, “I am
sorry.” It is not remorse; It is not admitting mistakes;
it is not saying in self-condemnation, “What a fool I’ve
been”. Who has not gone through such ineffectual and shal-
low rituals. Repentance is nothing less than a moral
and a spiritual revolution.
Repentance is not one of life’s hardest duties, and it is
a bounden duty, but it is a basic necessity for all spiritual
change and progress. A complete breakdown of pride,
of self-assurance, of the prestige that comes from material
of professional success, and of that last stronghold within
our hearts - the stronghold of selfishness.
Real repentance certainly must include, in addition to
those physical sins which we are all aware, those more
or less subtle sins of the spirit, such as pride, anger,
envy, slothfulness, covetousness, stubborness. These are
so often so elusive and so deceptive, that they are not
recognized and often even take the shape of righteousness.
How very often we have heard the expression "righteous
anger”. Can anger ever be righteous?
All this is why our Church, in her wisdom, has the Sa-
crament of Penance.
