Garber-Billings News August 25th, 2022
Sen. Roland Pederson
R-Burlington, District 19
Senate Review by Senator
Roland Pederson
Work at the Capitol nev er stops, but we're picking up the pace. Over the summer,
w e were meeting with constituents, state agencies and others about issues of impor-
tance to them. The appropriation subcommittees also met w ith their agencies to learn
how they spent their prev ious budgets and are planning to utilize their current ones.
This is the first step in the budget process.
The fall is when we start holding interim studies of those issues we didn't have
time to tackle during the legislative session. While more than 40 Senate studies were
approved, we’re now waiting to see w hich ones will be heard by the various commit-
tees. This decision is up to each committee chair.
1 requested one study this y ear to look at the permanency of foster care. Finding
kids permanent, loving homes is critical for those in DHS care. This study will find
better and more efficient ways to achieve this. Having caring, reliable foster parents
is crucial to the success of long-term placements and we want to ensure their rights
are protected. This study will be heard by the Senate Health and Human Services
Committee on Sept. 19. If you’re a former or current foster parent, I'd love to hear
your story and any suggestions for how to improve the sy stem. Please contact my of-
fice. Every one is welcome to attend these public meetings or w atch them live on the
Senate website at https: oksenate.gov publications senate-interim-studies. A sched-
ule w ith times and room numbers w ill be posted in the coming week.
Being a farmer anil rancher, I’m no stranger to the difficulties brought about by
()klahoma‘s unpredictable w eather. This y ear, we’re experiencing a horrific drought
that is destroy ing crops, hurting our livestock and turning small grass fires into major
catastrophes.
1 first and foremost want to thank all of our local brave tirefighters, who have
stepped up to help in neighboring counties. This is extremely dangerous work, but
these heroes nev er hesitate w hen duty calls. Thank you all for your serv ice and know
that y ou are in our continued prayers as our state continues to fight this hot, dry
weather. (ur prayers are also w ith the families who have been impacted by recent
wildfires. Our hearts are w ith you!
As the drought continues, I want to remind my fellow farmers and ranchers that
there is federal assistance av ailable for those suffering losses. Drought recov ery as-
sistance has been approv ed for 64 counties by the I J.S. Department of Agriculture
through the Liv estock Forage Disaster Program. Eligible producers w ho experience
grazing losses that require commercial livestock to be sold or otherw ise disposed of
can receive up to $125,000. Alfalfa, Garfield, Grant, and Kay Counties are among
those approved for these critical funds.
Another important financial program is the Emergency Assistance for Livestock,
Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program. This provides assistance for certain
feed losses not covered by LFP like transporting feed, higher-than-normal costs as-
sociated with hauling water to livestock and moving them to other grazing areas.
I he deadline to apply for both of these programs is Jan. 30, 2023. To learn more,
visit https: www.fsa.usda.gov/programs-and-serv ices disaster-assistance-program .
Again, our hearts are w ith the agriculture community as we continue to fight this
historic weather. Please pray for rain and that this drought ends soon.
If I can be of any assistance, please feel free to reach out to my office. You can
contact me at 405-521-5630 or via email at Roland.Pederson@oksenate.gov.
