years older than the campers is a real experience
and we learn a lot. One thing RYLA does is bring
out leadership. My kids, the Blue Group, were
amazing.”
She said staff members bond with their group
members and she tries to stay in touch with them.
“We never stop talking about RYLA,” said Branson.
“As a counselor you see a lot of growth in the kids
and it’s amazing how much can take place in one
week."
She shared a story about one young man who was
afraid of getting in front of people to talk, and how
at the end of the week he was able to participate in
front of the group.
“He said he had been helped so much, and that
makes me feel good,” said Branson.
She shared about a maize in which the partici-
pants reflect personally and although they have a
lot of good laughs, the youth open up a lot and some-
times it can become highly emotional.
She referred to this year’s camp experience as
"Survivor Redlands,” due to all the things that
went wrong and hindrances that caused them to
have to adapt to many situations.
She said Camp Redlands has 12 cabins divided
up between the boys and girls with someone on
patrol at night.
She said she now has 17 RYLA T-shirts and had
erected a display of photographs and shirts.---T
