To cut insurance costs,
some employers will pay
for healthy behavior
Perry Daily Journal - Wednesday, December 22, 2004 7
(KRT) Beginning Jan. 1, Nena Beesinger of Dalias
will get a discount on her health benefits because she
worked hard in 2004 to lower her blood pressure.
The 52-year-old cash manager at Presbyterian Hos-
pital of Dallas is part of an unusual program that Texas
Health Resources offers to its 17,000 employees to pro-
mote healthy living and help manage chronic condi-
tions. Over the last year, employees in the "Be Healthy
THR program have earned credits they can apply to
the cost of their benefits.
In two weeks, they’ll begin reaping the financial re-
wards of their healthier lifestyles when the first of their
2005 paychecks arrive. Beesinger got her points by eat-
ing fruits and vegetables, attending workshops on nu-
trition and fitness, and joining a dance exercise class.
For her efforts, she’ll save $5 on her benefit costs every
two weeks.
Texas Health Resources, which operates 13 nonprofit
hospitals in North Texas, built a financial incentive into
its employee wellness program to encourage workers
to take more responsibility for their health.
Nationally, employers’ health care costs are expected
to rise 11.3 percent for 2005, reaching an estimated
$7,269 per worker and $11,000 per family, according to
Hewitt Associates, a human resources consulting firm.
Many employers have coped with double-digit increases
in health care expenses by absorbing some costs them-
selves and passing on the rest to employees in larger
premiums, higher deductibles and bigger co-payments.
But those approaches can do only so much because
they don’t deal with the underlying health problems,
says Paul Fronstin, director of health research and edu-
cation at the Employee Benefit Research Institute. So
more employers are looking for ways to prompt work-
ers to take better care of themselves, and some are turn-
ing to financial rewards for employees who join fitness
clubs or stop smoking, Fronstin says. Human resources
experts say Texas Health Resources’ program is far
more comprehensive than most reward programs.
Employees earn credits for many different health-
related activities. They begin by signing on to a Web
site and completing a wellness assessment that advises
them how to improve their health.
Nurses help set realistic goals. Some earn credits by
meeting “physical activity challenges” throughout the
year. Participants got two credits each for 800 minutes
of physical activity this fall - about 20 minutes a day,
five days a week.
Other employees earn credits by enrolling in classes
about diabetes, heart disease or stress and by taking
preventive steps such as getting physical exams,
mammograms or prostate cancer screening. Texas
Health Resources officials say that saving money on
benefits persuaded employees to exercise, but many
soon discover that improved health is its own reward.
During the program’s first year, 4,500, or 31 percent,
of Texas Health Resources’ employees participated,
three times the first-year goal, says Michelle Kirby, vice
president of people and culture. More than 2,000 earned
enough credits to get a break on their 2005 benefit costs,
she says.
The overall savings to workers will be more than
$230,000. Kirby expects participation to grow during
the second year as Texas Health Resources adds ac-
tivities and doubles the incentive to $10 per paycheck.
