He Just Wants
To Be A Cowboy
By JOAN MORRISON
Muskogee Daily Phoenix
OKTAHA, Okla. (AP) —
As soon as Kial Logan gets
home from school, he heads
outdoors to have fun and
practice bull riding. Not on
a live animal, but on a buck-
ing barrel.
A50-gallon drum is tied be-
tween trees with ropes and
springs. Kial’s 10-year-old
sister, Gena, jerks the rope
and makes the barrel pitch
and dip. He practices his bal-
ance, his style.
He’s not the typical 12-
year-old who spends spare
time watching television,
playing video games or lis-
tening to music. He just wants
to be a cowboy.
His goal? To someday be
on television competing in
professional rodeos.
Kial’s parents encourage his
rodeo participation. It keeps
him occupied. They set stan-
dards he must meet scholas-
tically in order to compete
in three or four rodeos each
week.
“I think the way society is
today, it’s better for him to be
in rodeos for his father and

After the ride, he told his almost for certain has oppor-
mother he could have rid-
den the steer. Since that time,
he’s placed first or second at
every rodeo.
The first year Kial compet-
ed, Mrs. Logan wouldn’t
watch. She was scared and
didn’t want to see him get
hurt.
“I thought he might get it
out of his system and eventu-
ally stop,” she said. “But he
just gets stronger. I just say
God be with him and wish
him all the success in the
world.”
Mrs. Logan always has
known her son would be in
rodeos. When he was
younger, he would come
home from school, put on his
chaps, cowboy boots and hat
and watch television. His at-
tire was the same for riding
his bicycle.
At rodeos, Kial watches the
men ride the bigger bulls. He
watches to see how they stay
on — their techniques and
styles. He also seeks advice
from his uncles.

His father, Gary, was a bull
rider. All his uncles ride bulls
and rope calves. His mother
is a barrel racer and New
Hope Rodeo Grounds queen.
Now Kial is stepping into
the world of competition as a
bull rider. Because of his age,
he competes on steers, but
he’s not afraid to get on the
back of a bull.
In May, he was riding a bull
and it bucked him off. The an-
imal then stepped on his
stomach. Kial ended up in the
hospital for a week with a
pinched liver and internal
bleeding. Two months later,
he was back riding steers.
“My friend encouraged me
to get back on — he said
it’d be fun,” Kial said. “I
just got back on. It’s still fun.
