Wheat Weaving
Lesson By
Jo Vawter
"Wheat Weaving” was
topic of the lesson by Mrs.
Josephine Vawter when the
Sunny View family and
community education group
met July 8 in her home. Mrs.
Ione Steichen presided.
“Have you ever done
wheat weaving, and if so,
what did you make?” was
roll call response by Mrs.
Helen Nemec, Mrs. Dorothy
McKee, Mrs. Vawter, Mrs.
Steichen, Mrs. Katie Zavod-
ny, Mrs. Emma Prucha and
Mrs. Susan Spillman.
Mrs. Vawter gave a brief
history of wheat weaving.
She said the wheat is cut
when it is in the dough stage
and tied into bundles about
four inches in diameter. The
wheat is dried for two
weeks, then with sharp scis-
sors, the wheat is cut just
above the first joint. The
wheat is then soaked for 30
minutes, wrapped in a large
wet towel. A clove hitch is
used to tie the straw tightly.
Mrs. Nemec led group
singing of “Brighten the
Corner Where You Are."
Mrs. Vawter gave the devo-
tion. She read from The Up-
per room, “Lone Defender,"
based on the 91st Psalm.
Members voted to purchase
a brick for the Centennial
plaza. Mrs. Zavodny volun-
teered to furnish cookies for
the reception honoring Ar-
lene Green at the courthouse
Aug. 11.
Members signed a get-
well card for Tom Imgarten
who is hospitalized due to a
farm accident. Fair exhibits
were reviewed. Mrs. Steich-
en announced the leader's
lesson training for August to
be held July 28, and the state
council meeting July 12-13 in
Stillwater. The nickel drill
was won by Mrs. Spillman
and Mrs. Steichen. Refresh-
ments were served by Mrs.
Vawter.
The group’s next meeting
will be at 1:30p.m. Aug. 12
at Carnegie library. Mrs.
Nemec will be hostess.
