Horse
Trainer To
Get New
Streets
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)
— Horse trainer D. Wayne
Lukas will receive help from
the Oklahoma Transporta-
tion Commission in getting
his horses to the new train-
ing facilities to be located in
Norman,
The commission agreed
Monday to spend at least
$300,000 to improve streets
leading up to Lukas’ farms
north of Norman. Norman
and Cleveland County of-
ficials will provide another
$300,000 for the project.
A dirt road fronts the site
and nearby asphalt streets
are heavily patched and
spotted with holes.
Last week, Lukas an-
nounced he was going to
move his extensive horse
training facilities from
California to his 300-acre
Norman ranch.

At Least
65 Killed
In Soccer
Match
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) —
At least 65 people were kill-
ed when security forces
opened fire on the crowd at
a soccer game in Somalia’s
capital, diplomatic sources
said today.
Unofficial fatality
estimates in Friday’s
shootings range as high as
109, according to one source,
who said 65 people were con-
firmed dead at Mogadishu’s
Digfer Hospital.
More than 100 people were
seriously injured, another
source said.
It was unclear what
sparked the shooting, but
one source said it appeared
to enipt after a security of-
ficer opened fire while chas-
ing someone at the match.
The Somali government,
in a statement issued the
night of the incident,
acknowledged that security
forces had opened fire, but
said only three people had
been killed.
The Ministry of Labor,
Sports and Social Affairs
blamed the incident on over-
crowding and said people
had been hit by bullets when
security forces fired “high
into the air” to maintain
peace.
On Saturday, the ministry
dismissed the incident as a
“chance accident” and said
it had sent condolences to
the victim’s families.
Telephone connections to
Somalia were not working

be able to say I’ve joined
that elite group is certainly
something that’s mean-
ingful to me,” Switzer said.
Switzer went 157-29-4 in 16
years of coaching.
Lemons was philosophical
about the honor.
“It’s well appreciated, to
say the least,” he said. “I
don’t deserve it but then I’ve
got a touch of Parkinson’s
(disease) and I don’t
deserve that, either. I ap-
preciate it more than I do
that (the disease).”
Lemons wrapped up a
34-season career at
Oklahoma City University
last year after stints at Pan-
American and Texas. He
finished with 599 wins
against 343 losses.
Bench, who was in
Chicago for the All Star
game, was unable to attend
the announcement, but both
Switzer and Lemons had
high praise for the Hall-of-
Fame catcher.
“Obviously, he’s one of
the greatest players who
ever played,” Switzer said.
Lemons added, “I tried to
recruit John out of high
school.
“The last time I saw him I
told him if he'd come with
me he’d probably be prin-
cipal of the high school over
at Binger by now,” Lemons
said. “But he chose another
path.”
Bench slugged 389 homers
and was a National League
All-Star 13 years in a row.
All three are scheduled to
attend a Sept. 11 induction
banquet in the Marriott
Hotel.
The three were voted into
the Hall by 200 members of
the press, Jim Thorpe
Association and the
previous Hall of Fame in-
ductees after a list of 82
nominees was trimmed to
26.
Previous inductees in-
clude Jim Thorpe, Allie
Reynolds, Carl Hubbell, Bud
Wilkinson, Mickey Mantle
and Henry P. Iba in 1986. In
1987, the Hall inducted
Charles Coe, Harold Keith
and Bob Kurland. Last
year’s inductees included
Jim Shoulders, Bertha
Frank Teague and Billy
Vessels.
