First Snow
In History In
Abu Dhabi
ABU DHABI, United Arab
Emirates (UPI) — Snow fell
for the first time in recorded
history in the desert region on
the Persian Gulf that is now
tiie United Arab Emirates,
drawing curious visitors to
tiie oasis city of Al Ain.
The semi-official Al Ittihad
newspaper Sunday showed a
picture of a man holding a
large snowball in his hands
and said residents of Al Ain,
about 100 miles east of Abu
Dhabi, reported up to 18 in-
ches of snow Saturday over a
23-square-mile area.
“It was the first snowfall in
the history of the region,” the
newspaper said.
One excited resident,
Shafiq Sarkis, told Al Ittihad,
“The snow endured the heat
and heavy rainfall that follow-
ed for at least four hours
before melting.”
The “unique phenomenon”
has attracted many people
from surrounding villages,
the paper quoted Sarkis as
saying.
The United Arab Emirates
is made up of seven states
along the Persian Gulf. The
desert nation is about the size
of Maine.
