Seventy-five boys from several areas of Oklahoma by
Wednesday had entered the annual Perry Junior golf tourna-
ment set for tee-off at 8 a.m. Thursday and again Friday at the
Perry Golf and Country club.
The tournament attracted 83 young golfers a year ago. This
year there is a better representation of Perry boys than in the
1982 tournament.
Entered from Perry in the 11-and-under age group were
Steve Doughty, Chris Simon, Derek Fuzzell and Beau Adams.
Perry golfers entered in the older age groups are Clay Briegge,
Jason Logan, Joey O’Donnell, Chuck Hall and Chris Graves.
Boys in the 11-and-under age group will play nine holes each
day. Contestants in the other three older age groups will play 18
holes each day. The other age groups are for boys 12-13, 14-15
and 16-17. Trophies will be awarded to each of the first three
winners in each age group.
Action will begin Thursday morning with the 11-and-under
boys to tee off first.
Scoring for the two-day meet will be in charge of Mrs. Helen
Chitwood, Mrs. Mary Ruth Swart and Mrs. Dutch Dotts. Howard
Morgan is tournament chairman for the Perry Golf and Country
club.

Bv LEE COMEGYS
NEW YORK (UPI) - To his
fans, the legendary Jack
Dempsey was a 'champ" and a
"gentleman" to the end.
The former heavyweight
champion, 87, died Tuesday.
I used to call him ‘Champ,’"
said the owner of Louise Jr.’s,
an Italian restaurant down the
block from Dempsey’s apart-
ment. The restaurant was
Dempsey's favorite neighbor-
hood eatery.
"He was a gentleman to the
end," said the restaurant
owner, who asked to be
identified only as Paul. “He
looked all the time in good
shape, still that beautiful body
.... He's a legend."
At Danny Boy's bar around
the corner, Bill McGowan,
retired captain of Manhattan
South detectives, remembered
Dempsey “for his ferociousness
as a fighter. He was the one
with the killer instinct."
McGowan said he would sit at
the corner of the bar and see
Dempsey and an aide walk by
on Second Ave. Sometimes, he
would go out to greet “Mr.
Dempsey.”
"He was a champ. To every
kid that ever grew up, there
was Babe Ruth and Jack
Dempsey," he said.
A friend and admirer of the
athlete for "many, many
years,” Paul said Dempsey's
wife, Deanna, “used to make
him do exercises, you know
with the bicycle at home. He
was a natural athlete.”
The former champ frequented
the restaurant at least once a
week until the last year of his
life, sometimes with big groups
of friends, Paul said.
"He was walking with a stick
a little bit, but he was walking
nice,” Paul said.
The restaurateur would point
younger fans toward the
Champ's table.
“To the children, I would say,
‘You know that fellow? That's
Jack Dempsey.' And they
would un and get his
autograph," he said.
McGowan said Dempsey was
