Cleaning synthetic fabric
By Polly Fisher
DEAR POLLY — Do you know of any way to clean a chair
upholstered with a synthetic fabric (Herculon)? This is a
swivel rocker, covered in an off-white striped material that
looks very dingy. - R.H
DEAR R.H. — I’ve used carpet shampoo with great
success. Get the kind that sprays on and then just vacuums
off and use it on the chair the same way you’d use it on the
c carpet. Be careful not to soak the chair too thoroughly so
that the stuffing gets wet. If the chair is very dirty, a second
application might be required. Be sure to let the chair dry
thoroughly after cleaning before anyone sits on it. Uphol-
stery shampoos are also available, although I’ve found that
some supermarkets don’t carry them. If the pillow covers
are removable, you should be able to machine-wash this syn-
thetic fabric. — POLLY
DEAR POLLY - After years of struggling with the tedi-
ous task of trying to cover the fluted edges of pie crusts to
prevent over-browning, I hit upon the following idea. I cut
out the center bottom of an aluminum foil pie plate to within
a half inch of the side edge I place the tin upside down on
my pie (where it just covers the edge) as soon as it begins to
brown. Works perfectly. Now I have beautiful, evenly
browned pies Also, the tin is reusable FERN
DEAR FERN — I like your idea! I usually end up crushing
or breaking my carefully fluted edge whenever I try to cover
it with ordinary foil. For keeping all my future pies in per-
feet shape, you’ll receive the Pointer of the Week Award, an
autographed copy of Polly’s Pointers: 1081 Helpful House-
hold Hints for Making Everything Last Longer. Enjoy, and
keep baking! - POLLY
DEAR POLLY - The easiest way I’ve found to hull sun-
flower and pumpkin seeds is to snip one edge off with a nail
clipper. They open easily, making quick work of a tedious
chore. - PRISCILLA
DEAR POLLY — My husband found a great way to clear
our cluttered bathroom shelves. He threaded the cord from
our blow dryer through a plant hanger chain and hung it
from the ceiling near the mirror in our bathroom. Now we
can grab the dryer when we need it and it’s out of the way
The space it used to take up on the shelf is handy for other
items. — PAM

Today is Thursday, April 15,
the 105th day of 1982 with 260 to
follow.
The moon is approaching its
last quarter.
The morning stars are Venus
and Jupiter.
The evening stars are Mer-
cury, Mars and Saturn.
Those born on this date are
under the sign of Aries.
Italian painter Leonardo Da
Vinci was born April 15, 1452.
On this date in history:
In 1861, President Abraham
lincoln sent Congress a mes-
sage recognizing a state of war
with the South and calling for
75,000 volunteer soldiers.
In 1865. President Lincoln
died from an assassin’s bullet
and Andrew Johnson was sworn
in as chief executive.
In 1912, the luxury liner
"Titanic" sank off Newfound-
land. Of the 2,223 passengers
aboard, 1,517 were lost.
In 1975, the war in Cambodia
neared an end as communist
insurgents closed in on Phnom
Penh, the capital, from all
sides.
A thought for the day:
American author Mark Twain
(Samuel Clemens) said, “There
are several good protections
against temptations, but the
surest is cowardice.”

Chains Drape
Pioneer Woman
PONCA CITY, Okla. ( UPI) —
A feminist organization says it
draped the Pioneer Woman
statue in chains to show that
"all women are in chains until
the Equal Rights Amendment is
ratified."
The group, Radical American
Feminists, used plastic chains
so the statue of a woman and
her son would not be defaced, a
spokeswoman said in a news
release. The chains were placed
on the statue Monday night.
"Freedom does not exist until
the chains are removed from
all women with a constitutional
guarantee against sex discrimi-
nation." she said.
The RAF also claimed the
Democratic Party inflicted
"abuse" on the Pioneer Woman
by using a picture of the statue
but not showing it in chains.
A picture of the statue was on
the printed invitations sent to
Democratic legislators for a
"Friends of Freedom" fund-
raising dinner, the RAF said.
Sixteen Democrats were
among the 27 senators voting
against the ERA in the state
Senate in January. Twenty-one
