More Of A
Social Event
SPORTS
By JOE SARGIS
UPI Spurts Writer
PEBBLE BEACH. Calif.
(UPI) — The Bing Crosby
National Pro-Am, one of the
best-known golf tournaments in
the world, is a social happening
more than a golfing event and
this year seems to be no
exception.
Only Jack Nicklaus and Gary
Player will be missing from
Thursday’s start - Nicklaus is
staying at home in his new role
as a non-tour player and Player
is in South Africa, waiting for
the tour to reach Florida before
leaving for America
No one connected with the
Crosby seems all that upset
that Nicklaus and Player won’t
be there There is a solid
enough field without them,
including the winners of this
year’s first three events —
John Mahaffey in the Bob Hope
Desert Classic, Ben Crenshaw
in the Phoenix Open and Fuzzy
Zoeller in the San Diego Open
The field also includes Lee
Trevino, playing in a Crosby
for the first time in six years,
and, of course, defending
champion and 1978 Player of
the Year Tom Watson
But the one who will have the
biggest gallery is, as usual,
Arnie Palmer who wouldn’t
miss a Crosby under any
circumstances Here Palmer is
as popular as ever, and no one
really cares that he hasn’t won
a tournament since the 1973
Hope.
Adding to the attraction of
Arnies Army will be the fact
he’ll be teamed up again with
former President Gerald Ford
The last two years they drew
some of the biggest galleries in
the history of golf
Weather, as always, will be
on everyone’s mind. and. even
though the forecast is not that
good, pre-tournament ticket
sales are running high. Four
nice days, a close finish and
Ford surviving the cut for the
final round could push attend-
ance over 100.000
Rain Tuesday night softened
the three courses - Spyglass
Hill, Cypress Point and Pebble
Beach - and more rain was
expected today or tonight.
For the start on Thursday the
forecast is for clear weather
In the Crosby format each
pro — and his amateur partner
- plays all three courses
before the cut for the final ,
round at Pebble Beach The low
25 pro-am tears also survive
and fight it out on Sunday
Of course, everyone is rooting
for Arnie and Jerry to make it.
The former president has his
handicap down from 18 to 15
and played very well in the
Hope Classic three weeks ago
Arnie, though, didn't make that
cut.
