Olga Korbut
Has Retired
BY ALEX FRERE
LONDON (UPI) - Olga
Korbut, the Russian nymph
who literally lept to fame at the
1972 Olympics, has retired.
Korbut was scheduled to
make her farewell appearance
with the Russian team this
weekend but Russian officials
said Thursday she has had to
remain in Moscow in bed with
the flu and will not compete
again.
If her career ended in a
sniffle and a sneeze, it began
with a spine-tingling display
captured on television in the
gymnastics hall at the Munich
Olympics.

eyes while she lacked pure
gymnastic skill.
For five years she was the
star of the Russian team but
never the champion. First
Ludmilla Tourischeva and then
Nelli Kim outscored her in
competition and then Nadia
Comaneci of Romania over-
shadowed her completely by
scoring a series of perfect 10
scores in Montreal.
Though the scores represent-
ed more of an inevitable
escalation in the gymnastics
scoring system than perfection
itself, it was obvious Korbut’s
competitive days were over.
Her talent as a gymnast,
according to her teammates, is
due to her exceptionally flexible
spine which helps her in the
floor exercises. She has been
captured often on film with her
legs bent backwards over her
head on the beam.
Her coaches quickly realized
her ear-to-ear smile and zesty
character would do as much to
help her as balance or
choreography, and she was
carefully coached from the
start for Munich.
Unlike many Western ama-
teur sports stars, for whom a
gold medal is merely a
stepping stone into public
oblivion. Korbut, now 22, will
have a secure future in the
Soviet Union.
First she plans to return
home to Grodno near the Polish
border and marry what Rus-
sians officials called a “pop
star" next month, then begin a
career of coaching.
