Newkirk Falls To
Perry Bs, 30-16
By MIKE KIRK
With a first quarter outburst that put the Newkirk Tigers in
a hole early, the Perry high school Maroon B team took a 30-16
victory Monday night on Daniels field at the Perry stadium
The locals got on the scoreboard shortly after the opening
kickoff and moved the ball to the 17-vard line. Quarterback Jim
Hillis tossed a pass to tightend Brad Finley over the middle.
Finley then fought his way into the end tone. Kevin Porter was
denied a two-point conversion
Minutes later. Perry got the ball back on a fumble recovery
on the 35-yard line Porter traveled 25 yards to pay dirt on the
third play. Finley snagged a pass in the end zone to give Perry a
14-0 lead. Still in the first quarter, the Tigers were forced to
punt. Mike Hodge of Perry picked off the ball on the Maroon
45-yard line and streaked down the sidelines for a 55-yard TD
Porter ran in for the conversion points to give Perry a 22-0 lead.
Early in the second period, Jim Hillis picked up a loose ball
and outran everyone to the end zone for still another touchdown.
After Porter streaked in for the two points, the Maroons held a
30-0 bulge
The Tigers got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter
on a three-yard run and made the conversion to cut Perry’s lead.
There was no scoring in the third quarter as major penalties
bogged down the Maroons Newkirk scored again in the fourth
quarter when they fumbled on the four-yard line and recovered
the ball in the end zone. The two-point conversion was good to
make the score 30-16 Newkirk threatened again after blocking a
Perry punt, but Hillis sacked the quarterback for an eight-yard
loss.
Mike Hodge sealed the Tigers' fate with an interception on
the eight-yard line. Tailback Kevin Porter led the Maroons with
162 yards in 19 carries The B Maroon defensive unit held
Newkirk to only 136 yards on the ground in 36 tries
The locals now have a 2-2 record for the year The next game
for the Bees is Monday, Oct. 3 at Garber beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Sooners
Still In
A Tingle
By RICK GOSSELIN
UPI Sports Writer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UPI) -
The state of Oklahoma is still
in a tingle over the Sooners'
last second 29-28 victory Satur-
day over Ohio State.
"I didn't realize how much
that game meant to everyone in
our state," said Oklahoma
Coach Barry Switzer by tele-
phone at the weekly media
briefing at the Big Eight
headquarters
In Oklahoma City, Tulsa.. I
didn't realize what it meant to
these people until we got back
Saturday. I understand they
even let go in Stillwater when
we kicked the field goal to win
it."
That field goal was a 41-
yarder by Uwe von Schamann
with three seconds left to cap a
nine-point scoring outburst by
the Sooners in the final 1:29 to
secure the victory in their first
ever visit to Columbus.
"We're even getting some
overflow reaction today,” said
Switzer, whose team was
greeted at the airport by 500
fans upon its arrival backfrom
Columbus and was met by
another crowd of 500 when it
pulled into Norman by bus.
"The victory over Michigan
in the Orange Bowl (1976) gave
us the national championship,"
said Switzer. "There was a lot
of pressure in that one
Victories over Texas and
Nebraska are always big for
us. But this one ranks right up
there with those at the top."
That victory highlighted a 7-1
performance last weekend by
the Big Eight against noncon-
ference opponents, with the
only loss suffered by winless
Missouri The Tigers rallied
from a 20-7 deficit to take a 21-
20 lead against California only
to lose on a touchdown pass in
the final three minutes.
"I was proud of our effort,”
said Missouri coach Al Onofrio.
‘We've been close in all three
of our games and had chances
to win them. A break here and
another there and we could be
3-0 But we've got the same
team, without the breaks, and
we're 0-3. It's both frustrating
and disappointing."
