Big Time In Perry!
She should just say
“NO!”
By Abigail Van Buren
DEAR ABBY: I've been struggling with this problem for
a year and can't seem to come up with a solution.
1 am 27, reasonably attractive and divorced. When a girl
is 21 and not yet married, she can say no to a fellow and use
the excuse that she is saving herself for marriage. But when
she's 27 and divorced, what can she say that will be
acceptable?
If I say. "I don't believe in sex outside marriage," It
sounds like I'm trying to rope myself another husband,
which is not necessarily true.
How can I get around this? What I need is some clever
saying that will get me off the hook without making me
sound like a goody-goody
STUMPED
DEAR STUMPED: What makes you think you have to
either deliver, or come up with an excuse? Surely you have
something other than sex to offer a man. Just say: “No,”
and don’t feel that you have to justify it.
Countyans
Attended
DEAR ABBY: The days when girls went to college to
catch a husband are a thing of the past If girls don’t get an
education so they can support themselves they will end up
on welfare
The no-fault divorces are telling a story loud and clear.
Women are not going to be able to hook a man and live off
him for the rest of their lives.
A relative of mine is now looking for work at the age of 67
For 15 years her ex-husband sent her $800 a month, and she
spent every dime of it. Last month she was told there will be
no more checks and now she is half out of her mind. She’s
never done any kind of work in her life. She s hopelessly
helpless.
She wants to come and live with me. I told her no. At age
45. 1 went back to school for two years to prepare myself for
the job I now have. 1 like being independent, and I don t
want to give up my privacy, which is what I would have to
do if I let her come and live with me. Do you blame me?
ANONYMOUS
TOGETHER FOR A VISIT Sunday were five
generations of a local area family. They
visited together at the home of Mrs. Abidell
VanHoesen, 1115 Delaware street. On the
front row, Mrs. Marie Ustler, 84, Left, Perry,
and Mrs. VanHoesen, 63. On the second row,
left to right, Jennifer VanHoesen, 2, Perryton,
Texas; Roy VanHoesen Jr., 22, Perryton,
Jennifer’s father; and Roy VanHoesen Sr., 44,
Perryton, father of Roy Jr. (Staff photo.)
DEAR ANONYMOUS: I’d have to know more about the
relationship between you and this relative. If she is someone
who looked alter you when you were helpless, it would make
a difference.
DEAR ABBY The girl I’m dating has been invited to
her cousin’s wedding She received a formal invitation, and
enclosed was a note which read: "I am sorry, but I must ask
you please not to bring a guest as it will be too much Thank
you.” and it was signed by the bride’s mother.
My question: Isn’t it customary for a girl who is dating
someone special to be allowed to bring him? 1 had quite a
long discussion with my girl friend. I told her that under the
circumstances I didn’t think she should attend the wedding
either as I do not approve of her going without me as her
escort
I would like your opinion.
I OBJECT
DEAR OBJECT Objection overruled! You aren't
officially engaged to her and should not expect to be
included You appear to be unduly possessive of a girl you
are only “dating " And you are out of order to insist that
she not attend her cousin’s wedding because you were not
made welcome. Case dismissed.

MANSON GETS OBSTINATE
VACAVILLE, Calif. (UPI) -
Charles Manson, 39, convicted
in the slayings of actress
Sharon Tate and eight other
persons, refused to return to his
prison cell Friday and scuffled
with a guard.
Prison officials at the Cali-
fornia Medical Facility said the
guard managed to push Manson
into the cell. The convict
suffered a minor cut over his
left eye and refused medical
treatment.
Manson was transferred here
recently from Folsom State
Prison for a psychiatric exami-
nation.
The altercation with the
guard came after Manson had
undergone a physical examina-
tion.
Classrooms
Show End Of
Baby Boom
By PAMELA REEVES
CHICAGO < UPI) — The end
of the baby boom is beginning
to show in the country’s
classrooms, and the empty
desks are producing what one
educator calls "a psychology of
anxiety."
Teachers worry about losing
their jobs, parents worry that
the neighborhood school will
close to consolidation and
school superintendents worry
that money supplies will decline
with enrollment.
A UPI survey of Illinois
schools shows the situation is
typical of what other states
face, or will in the future. For
example
—Illinois School Superintend-
ent Michael Bakalis’ office
recently issued enrollment pro-
jections indicating a drop of 7
to 12 per cent statewide in
elementary and secondary
schools by 1980
-In Champaign, Ill., four
elemntary schools have been
closed in four years, an
experience Superintendent Mar-
shall Berner describes as
“traumatic."
—Due to an unusual situation,
first grade enrollment has
dropped 50 per cent in the
Chicago North Shore suburb of
Niles Township.
Most schools, just over the
crest of 20 years of solid
growth, are nervous about the
change, even though many
have yet to feel its impact.
Suddenly, the whole thrust
of bigness and largeness is
going to stop,” Bakalis says. "I
think that causes some psycho-
logical strains. Really very
little educational planning has

Dan Lortie, professor of
education at the Unifersity of
Chicago and former director of
the Midwest Administration
Center (UC’s school for ad-
ministrators), says the decline
can lead educational thinkers
through ' a web of inferences.”
“The average age of teachers
will probably go up,” he says,
since seniority will determine
who is dropped, and that could
lead o more conservatism in
the classoom
School administrators proba-
bly will try to close some
buildings, he says, but will
meet strong resistance because
“people develop sentiments
around schools.”
And, in a society which thinks
that “bigger is better,” Lortie
says, a decline "introduces a
psychology of anxiety People
get tense about their jobs.”
Many school leaders feel the
decline will enable them to
offer innovative programs and
a better student-teacher ratio —
if the decline does not result in
a cut off of funds.
