SERMONETTE
Warning Against Hypocrisy
Matthew 23:1-28
By Rev. Joseph Wong, Pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church
According to the text, the invi-
tation of the Pharisee to dine with him
gave Jesus the opportunity to teach a
lesson. He omitted the customary
washing before the meal, and when He
was criticized, He in return exposed
their faults. They stressed outward
purity, but did not touch the evil in the
heart; they paid tithes on the smallest
vegetable that grew in their garden,
but neglected the really important vir-
tues. They were ambitious and proud,
seeking honor among men.
Hypocrisy is a most atrocious
sin because it is sinning deliberately
against better knowledge. The hypo-
crite knows what is right; he tries to
make people believe he is doing right,
while he consciously and deliberately
does what he knows is wrong.
Phariseeism has not died out in
the course of time. Hypocrisy is a very
prevalent sin. Worse than that, hypoc-
risy is born into us all. Even the best
Christian will find this weed growing
in his heart.
Let us examine our hearts for any
signs of this sin; and if we find them,
go to Him who has bled and died to
cleanse us from all sin, even this loath-
some since of hypocrisy. And then with
His help, let us cleanse our hearts from
this filth and live uprightly before the
Lord and men.
