Are Colts
Moving to LA?
By MURRAY OLDERMAN
SAN FRANCISCO (NEA)
WEST COAST REPORT Think Carroll Rosenbloom
still isn’t interested in pitching his pro football base in
LA? Only thing holding him up is commitment not to do
anything while this season’s being played But his Balti-
more disenchantment is real, sparked by unfriendly
newspaper attacks by former Colt employe. Other hold-
up could be latest asking price of $21 million for Ram

Allie Sherman has also been looking into it . .
What really led to the slapdown of UCLA star athlete

Rick Barry wants to know

knocking his ABC broad-

says he'll work with him
diligently way he did with Dandy Don Meredith for whose
TV career Cosell takes credit .
Biggest reason National League won t go for the San
Diego-to-Washington switch, though Buzzie Bavasi has
reportedly been soliciting votes, is that it’s a lot more
wholesome to lose 100 grand a year, as the Padres did,
than a million per annum, as the late Senators did Also
there’s the matter of local pride with S Arnholt Smith,

That basebail general manager who made himself
look silly and maybe jobless, with his conflicting testi-
mony in the case of a controversial ballplayer, didn’t
exactly have the confidence of the players on his team
When he came down to field level during batting practice
one day, the players intentionally slashed foul line drives
toward him
The use of odd defenses in the American Football Con
ference—in which a defensive lineman plays over the
nose of the center—has made veteran pivot men sudden
ly weight conscious. Bill Curry of the Baltimore Colts,
who used to play at 230, has puffed up to 240 to meet
the threat ... .
For an irreverent and yet appreciative look at the
sport of pro football, you couldn’t do better than Larry
Merchant's just published meditation, “. And Every
Day You Take Another Bite" (Doubleday). Larry, the
New York Post sports columnist who was a charter
member of the "Chipmunk" movement of sports writing,
is at his levelling best in not taking seriously the social
mongering of football as an evil institution by "The NFL

sympathetic to them as individuals marching to their

Their running backs are more halfback-sized It’s the

Mrs. Burnside
Draws Coveted
Hunting Permit
Mrs. Duane Burnside of Albu-
querque, N.M., wife of a former
Perryan, was one of only three
New Mexicans to draw rights to
a Rocky mountain big horn
sheep hunting permit.
There were 128 hunters who
had their names in the barrel
for the permit, one of whom was
Mrs Burnside’s husband who
has been applying unsuccess-
fully for 10 years. This was Mrs.
Burnside's first try.
The week the big horn sheep
permits are valid, Dec. 11-19,
will be the only time during the
entire season that rifles will be
allowed on the Sandia moun-
tains. The rest of the time, only
bows and arrows are legal. Per-
sons may hunt deer in the
Sandias from Oct. 16 through
Jan. 30.
Duane Burnside, who was
reared on a farm 10 miles north
of Perry, is a son of Mrs. C. M.
Burnside, 1508 Seventh street.
He is a builder in Albuquerque
Mrs Burnside’s parents are
Mr and Mrs. Leo White of Okla-
homa City. White is captain of
the highway patrol out of Okla-
homa City.
