there are no picture books, in-
cluding “funny books.”
The Sequoyah award has
been presented annually since
1960—and Oklahoma young-
sters’ taste has varied widely,
although animal stories and
science fiction hold a slight
edge so far.
Last year’s winner was "Ras-
cal." the story of a raccoon and
a boy, by Sterling North. It was
the third animal book to win in
the eight years of competition.
The others were "Black Gold,"
about an Oklahoma horse, by
Marguerite Henry, and “Old
Yeller," a dog story, by Fred
Gipson,
Two science fiction books for
children have won in past years
—"A Wrinkle in Time” by
Madeleine L'Engle, and "Have
Space Suit., Will Travel,” by
R. A. Heinlein.
There’s also a mystery on the
winners' list—"The Mystery’ of
the Haunted Pool,” by Phyllis
Whitney: and one biography,
“The Helen Keller Story," by
Catherine Owens Peare.
The only Oklahoma author to
win the Sequoyah Award—a
plaque depicting the well-known
Cherokee Indian who invented
an alphabet for his tribe—has
been Edward Robinson, a Tulsa
teacher His “Where the Panth-
er Screams," a story of early-
day Oklahoma, was chosen best
of the year in 1964.
