Looking Good Garbe

The Murals painted so brilliantly by Dr. Bob Palmer and his
students from Central State University pictured as they appear
above are the south side of the Bus Barn, north side of the
Garber-Billings News and south wall by City Hall. You'll have to
make a trip to Garber to really appreciate the beautiful colors of
these murals. Dr. Palmer and his students will return to Garber in a
week to finish up some other walls around town.
If you have driven down Main
Street lately you've surely no-
ticed the beautiful murals. They
are drawing a lot of attention
and compliments from citizens
both young and old We would
like to thank Dr. Bob Palmer,
head of the Art Department at
the University of Central Okla-
homa. and his art department
for their beautiful work.
The Garber Community Im-
provement Association (CIA)
contacted Dr. Palmer several
months ago regarding the possi-
bility of his department coming
to Garber Dr. Palmer attended
a couple CIA meetings and ex-
plained how his department was
able to offer this project. The
University would award a grant
to the Art Department to cover
half the cost of their projects.
The CIA realized what a great
asset the murals would be to
Garber and agreed to cover the
other half of the cost through
fund-raisers and donations.
The CIA has chosen "Sunday
Community Dinners" as their
means of raising funds for the
murals. The first Sunday Dinner
will be held June 13 at the XYZ
Center, with a second Dinner
planned for June 27 (menu to be
announced at a later date).
Tickets will be $6.00 for adults
and $3.00 for children 12 and
under. Dinner will be served
from 11:30 am to 2 p.m. Every-
one come and bring your
friends to eat and view the
beautiful new murals. The June
13th Dinner Menu will be as
follows: Spaghetti. Green
beans. Salad, Garlic Bread. De-
sert and Tea or Coffee
In addition to the Sunday
Community Dinners the CIA
has tentatively scheduled an
outdoor cook out on Saturday.
June 12, starting at 11 am. All
proceeds to go to the mural
fund. More information on the
cookout will appear in next
weeks Garber-Billings News.

Design Works1 Presentation
Opens Closed Doors
Memorial Day... A
Time To Remember
On Wednesday . May 26. the
DesignWorks Team, from the
Oklahoma Arts Council toured
Garber. Several local citizens
were interviewed. DesignWorks
looked at Garber through the
eyes of someone new coming
into town and gave us their sug-
gestions on improving the looks
of Garber. On Thursday at a 5
p.m. Town Meeting Design-
Works presented their sugges-
tions and ideas on giving Gar-
ber a facelift to a room full of
excited citizens.
The team listed Garber’s
strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths are many , with num-
ber one on the list being the
wonderful people. The Team
did however find three weak-
nesses that they feel need ad-
dressed immediately:
1. Buildings - The Design-
Works Team said the downtown
buildings should to be saved.
They believe this needs done
immediately before the build-
ings are to far gone to salvage.
2. Sidewalks - The Design
Team described our sidewalks
as lethal and recommended we
replace them immediately. The
Team offered a beautiful design
for new sidewalks, which in-
cluded some landscape ideas.
3. Housing - The Team saw a
shortage of adequate housing in
Garber and suggest we take
immediate action to secure ad-
ditional housing additions.
The team gave a lot of land-
scape and architectural ideas,
which can be accomplished
with little money but a lot of
elbow grease. One of their sug-
gestions consisted of a land-
scaping idea for City Hall. To
complement the beautiful mural
painted by the Art Department
from the University of Central
Oklahoma and recruited by the
CIA, the Design Team sug-
gested removing the bell from
the City Hall Court Yard and
replacing it with another Red-
bud Tree. DesignWorks also
gave suggestions on types of
ground covering that could be
used to keep the yard looking
spectacular with low mainte-
nance.
A small sitting park on the lot
just North of the Garber-Bill-
ings Newspaper Office was also
suggested. A bench or two
could be added along with ex-
isting trees.. Minimum land-
scaping and possibly relocating
the bell to this location trans-
form this into a beautiful little
park.
Another suggestion was to
plant evergreen vine plants
around the swimming pool to
screen the fence. A landscaping
design for the entire pool yard
was presented.
The DesignWorks Architect
presented a plan on what the
Fire Department would look
like if the old wood is taken off
the front. Landscaping the front
of the Fire Department was also
presented.
The Design Team gave some
wonderful ideas for Main Street
to add charm and appeal to our
community. These include a
center island with foliage com-
plimented with old time
streetlights.
The DesignWorks Team was
invited to come to Garber by the
Garber Community Improve-
ment Association (CIA). Re-
freshments and fellowship fol-
lowed the presentation.
The CIA meets the 1" and 3
Thursday of each month at 7
p.m. at the Community Center
on Main St. Every one is invited.
Please get involved and help
with the rebuilding and beauti-
fication of Garber.
