Traffic Violations
Expensive Last Year
Traffic violations were an ex-
pensive luxury for 55623 motorists
in Oklahoma last year Figures re-
leased today by Commissioner of
Public Safety Joe Cannon show
that fines and costs collected by
the 77 counties in Oklahoma from
traffic violators amounted to
$1478326
There are still 11645 cases pend-
ing in the courts These are out of
a total of 74095 traffic arrests
made in 1959 by troopers of the
Oklahoma highway Patrol
There have been 55623 COnVie
tions with only 74 acquittals An-
other 4994 cases were dismissed
or refused by county attorneys
and 1755 other cases did not come
to trial for other reasons including
death and completion of additional
Investigation
Cannon emphasized that these
figures apply only to arrests made
by the patrol and do not include
the thousands of violators arrested
and fined in local courts
Ile also made it plain that all
money collected in lines and costs
goes to the treasury of the county
In vhich the violation was com-
mitted No revenue from this
source goes to the state or to the
department
The average cost per offense is
Slightly under $2700 an expense
which any driver can avoid by
complying with the traffic laws
