TEXAS PLANNING TO GO
UNDER RIVER FOR OIL
Austin Tex—CPI—On January 1
the State of TeXUS will join major
and in oil companies in recovering-
from beneath the piney hills of
east Texas part of the crude oil
wealth discovered there
East Texas operations of the 4tate
oil company with its 60u0000 citizen
stockholders N ill be restricted how-
ever to the stream bed of the Sabine
river under the law enacted by the
last special session of the Texas legis-
lature The sahine river winds its way
between leayes of major companies in
the large east Texas field for nearly
forty-live miles Althougli the state
vvill not drill on the entire length of
the bed it expects to recover nearly
$10000000 believed to lie beneath
the Sabine's sluggish waters
A drilling fund of $60000 IN ill be
appropriated froin the general reve
nue fund for the first two wells
should the mineral board created by
the new law decide to drill
Three courses are opened to the
board composed of Gov Ross Sterl-
ing the commissioner of the land
office and the chairman of the rail-
road commission The board is au-
thorized to advertlse for bids on leas-
ing river beds in proven oil territory
for actual drilling of the stream beds
or the board may accept a purchase
of the oil in plaee
The last avenue is a legal method
to allow the state to deal with lease-
holders on either side of the stream
Thoy would pay the state for the oil
beneath the river bed then draw it
out through wells situated in their
own leases bordering the Sabine
river
The river bed oil law allows such
development On all streams in Texas
but restricts the mineral board to
proven territory The law forbids
the mineral board to drill a Well
more than two miles away from a
payinr producer

For 67 hours Oklahoma City was illuminated by flames from the Empire Oil & Refining Co's Custin
No 2 well In the northeast edge of the city field—the flames that claimed the life of Charles R "Choc"
Biddle and inflicted injuries on five other men
At 9:30 o'clock Thursday morning Floyd° Kinley endangered his life by carrying 30 quarts of ni'ro
glycerin to a point within three feet of the mouth of the burning well and after retreating to a safe dis
tance set off the charge that blew the fire out
Pictured above is the well shortly after the first explosion which set it on fire The men in the fore-
