Farmers' Week and 4-H Round-up
Successful
The person who is Skept len! o the!
future of agriculture in Oklahoma !
t!hould have visited the 4-It club
Round-up held at the Oklahoma Ag-I
ricultural and Mechanical college
last week where there were assem-I
bled Home 1500 outstanding boys!
and girls representing 72 counties of
the state In this group were many:
of the future leaders in the state of
Oklahoma anti the optimism and
tiative shown by this group mukes
believe that there is a brighter
day for farm people in Oklahoma
Perhaps not "just around the cor-:
ner" as many have suggested but Nye !
hope it no far distant date
Orville Siegenthaier and Cleo Bak-
CI two of Payne county's outstand-I
ing club boys won first in the state
demonstrating the selections of dairy:
cows These two boys are doing on'
the farm the things that they attemp-
ted to demonstrate to the public dur-
ing the round-up Orville beirg the!

Jerseys and Cleo the proud posses-I
sor of 4-ight head of Guernseys
Many Farmers interested in Austrian
Winter Peas
Considerable interest is being:
thomm by farmers throughout the
county in the planting of Austrian:
winter peas The county agent sug-
gested in this column some weeks'
ago that he would perhaps be able to
tecure small quantities of pea seed:
fcr a number of farmers to be used
in demonstration plots however it
iooks now as though money will not I
be available with which to purchase
the seed but some of the seed stores I
in Stillwater have agreed to stock
the seed and sell them at tho lowest
price possible and an attempt will be
made to induce seed men in the other:
towns of Payne county to also
handle a sufficient amount of the I
seed for demonstration purposes I
Hairy vetch is also a winter le-
gume showing considerable possibill-1
ties in this area Winter legume
should be planted from September 1
to October 15 The Alabama experi-:
ment station recommends the drilling:
of vetch at the rate of 20 pounds per
erre and Austrian winter peas at
the rate of 30 pounds per acre They
also insist that careful inoculation be
done in every instance before plant-I
ing This will insure the presence
of nitrogen fixation bacteria which is
essential if the plant is to make satis-
factory growth and build up the soil
On poor land it is :perhaps advisable
to apply superphosphates before
planting either vetch or winter peas
as much of our land is very low in
phosphates

RECALES ADVISES
411 DELEGATIONS
Delegalog to the annual 4-II chili
round-up now in zession at Okla
homa Agricultural and Mechanical
I
Delegates to the annual 4-11 club
round-up now in session at Okla-
homa Agricultural and Meehanical
college were admonished to make
financial successes of themselves by
Josh Lee head of the speech depart-
ment of Oklahoma university Thurs-
day morning
'You've heard so much about the
evils of money you begin to think it
is wrong to make it' said Lee "That
idea is all wrong If a man knows
how to save money that is a good in-
dication of his character You can
never have much leadership until
you are out of debt and financially
independent It cuts off your influ-
ence not to have anything To start
out with nothing and nake something
is the greatest game in the world"
How to avoid "hot-checking" was
outlined by Lee to the large group
of farm boys and g:rls here for a
week's training "Don't spend money
is an economical truism we forgot
is a neeonomical truism we forgot
during our recent prosperity That
is one of the reasons why we are in
our present condition" The install-
ment plan so popular in pre-depression
days was blamed also for the
current hard times
All hot-checking is not done
through banks Lee declared "You
can hot-check on your reputation
socially too There are too many
folks who try to Cadillac around'on a
Ford income Don't pretend to be
something you are not
"Don't hot-check morally" he con-
tinued "Build -up a good bank ae-
eount of character Character de-
pends on your ability to say no It
also means the ability to say yes and
stick to it It is self control and self
denial"
R O T C military work in col-
leges was praised by Lee because
through it many young men take
something they de not care to "I
wouldn't trust 2 man who couldn't
practice self-dsnial any farther than
I could throw a shoat by the tail" he
exclaimed provoking a gale of laugh-
ter Ile frequently regaled the au-
dience with anecdotes and jokes
"It is the hard things about life
that make character" Lee said
"The storm hardens the oak the
rough part of the grindstone sharpens
the ax"

QUESTIONNAIRE SENT TO
FORMER MEMBERS OF
To find value of 441 club work
end to show what college students
from the farm do during vacations
a questionnaire is being sent all stu-
dents at the Oklahoma Agricultural
and Mechanical college of the last
year who have belonged to the agri-
cultural organizations
Results of the queries will be tab-
ulated and answers to many may be
used for publicity purposes The stu-
dents are asked to send photos of
themselves on the farm tractor driv-
irg horses working in the field in
the kitchen in the garden or in an
informal pose with working clotheS
to the extension division which is
conducting the inquiry
The questions are varied including
the following:
"Do you spend your summer vaca-
tion on the farm? How do you as-
sist with the work? Do you have 4n
ambition to return to the farm after
graduation? In what definite ways
has the experience of 4-11 club work
been of value to you? Do you own
any stock as the result of club work?
Has 4-11 club work improved the
status of social life in your communi-
ty? What do you think is most
needed to make farm life more satis-
factory?" LIONS MEET RURAL FOLK

gether at Cottonwood schoolhouse

wood Parent-Teacher association was
the occasion
Mrs E A Johnson president of
the P-T A in a short talk follow-
ing the supper welcomed the "city

prenent conditions to the war or to
the Farm Board or to any other
recent thing" It tie declared A F
Lever member of the Federal Form
Board was on the stage while Mrs
S4huttler was speaking "Agricul-
ture has been in a bad way for a
long time If we had realized it a
long time ago we might not be in our
present critical shape
"Agriculture has been sick a long
that kept it from realizing its true
time but didn't know it One thing
condition was the unpaid woman la-
bor it utilized Agricolturists cut
corners and produce cheaply by using
wives and children for labor" Ris-
ing land values were also blamed as
a cause for the depression
"Farmers didn't learn the lesson
of cooperation with other branches
of industry" the genial farm leader
from Farmington Mo declared

groups tin a firm believer in farm

of our nation"
The country cannot right itself
while the farmers are in economical
distress Mrs Sehuttler said "The
fight for agriculture is no selfish
