Hands-off Policy Is Best
Foy Farients of Young Couple
4
: By RUTH MILLETT
Jane and Bill both IT after a year of going steady got
married and then Informed their parents of what they had
done
Their parents dismayed by the news but tonvinced that
their reeponsibility to their children didn't automatically come
fo id end just because the children had gotten married decided
titinanci the marriage until the young people could get on their
feet
Jane's parents gave her an allowance and Bars perents also
gave him one The two handouts added together ere enough
for the young couple to pay rent on an apartment buy food
keep up Bill's car and have some epending money That was a
year I ago 1
Today Jane Is back with her parents and Bill has moved back
with his—and the marriage Is going bend in divorce
But buret a tar different story as told by a young wife in
a letter to this column
11 was IS when I married and I bad a baby when I was In
"My husband couldn't get a job that would support us both
so I worked when I could the first two years of our marriage
We quarreled conseantly because we didn't understand each other
I admit that if I bad had the"money I would have divorced my
husband any time witih the first two years of our marriage
"But we were so bard up we had to stick together Now after
almost four years of marriage my husband has a good job with
a future we love each other and our two boys and our only re
gret Is that we didn't finish high school But we plan to do that
In night school
"What turned our Infatuation into real love was facing hard
ship together—because we couldn't afford to run away We lost
a baby that Was born prematurely It was a struggle Just to
get enough food to est But having to face the hardships to
gether made us grow up fast
"At le I am a happy woman And I have a happy husband
and two fine children' I just thought our story 'might entourige
Other young couple Who are tempted to give up instead of tight'
Int their way through"
Her letter might also encourage parents to keep hands (W—
instead of thinking they are being helpful by making things
financially easy fur a young couple who rue 'off end get married
