MAJOR WATERSHEDS NOW
BEING STUDIED
Eighteen critical watersheds of the
Nation now are the object of a joint
detailed study by the Bureau of
Agricultural Econornigs the Soil Con-
servation Service and the Forest Ser-
vice These studies are being conducted
under authority of the national flood
control act of the natioral flood con-
trol act of 1936 with a view to deter-
mining how land resources within
these watersheds may be expected to
contribute through develctment and
management to the control floods
Eventually the surveys will cover
200 major watersheds Preliminary
examinations already have been made
In 25
The surveys were authorized by Con-
gress on the assumption that pre-
vention and control of floods is not a
matter alone of building dams and

mately 41700000 trees were distributed
in 1937 and 35600000 in 1936 The
young trees used are seedlings and
transplants which farmers can plant
at the rate of 500 to 1000 per day
The Clarke-McNary Law passed in
1924 provides for the allotment of

for forest planting on farms
A total distribution of 7036000
forest tree seedlings by Georgia gave

second place with distribution of 6-
610000 young trees and Pennsylvania

which distributed more than 3000000

PROTECT OUR
T HE president of a large manu
facturing concern called in his
staff of assistants one day To them
he put this problem:
The company was in
I
third place in its In '
dustry but the presi-
dent aspired to
make it the leader v '4 etv-e
What could they do 5$ '2 -
to realize that atribi- 7 4 1
tion?
Together those ex-
ecutives worked out bt'
a plan It was based -''''''A-ty
upon the belief that 14 4-
if the public knew as Charles Roth
much about the ex-
cellence of their product and the
loftiness of their business ideals as
they who worked for the company
knew the public would respond with
a greater measure of sales
The several thousand employees
of that company agreed that they
would at all cost protect their good
name No one would do anything
In the manufacture of the product
which would in any way discredit
the company No one would say a
word which would in any way belit-
tle the good name of the firm or its
product
"Protect Our Good Name" was
the slogan adopted—it became the
watchword for the company in all
its dealings and in all its thinking
Inside of 18 months the company
passed Its only rival for first place—

A little story we recently heard
seems to hint a possible solution of
the Unemployment problem though
we don't quite see at this moment
how it may be applied It appears
thst a number of years ago before
the oil boom a traveling man was
talking to a ranch owner in Texas
and hearing the latter's hard luck
story he asked: "How in the world
do you make things go at all?"
"You see that feller over there?"
said the Texan pointing to a man
a little distance away "Well he
works for me and I can't pay him In
two years he gets the ranch Then I
work for him till I get it back"

By CHARLES B ROTH
GOOD NAME'
a victory for honesty In thought and
purpose and advertising
Any advertiser has a reputation to
live up to which a business man who
does not advertise does not have It
is the reputation to protect his good
name and to keep prices reasonable
The first and most precious thing
In business is reputation or good
name Whenever a business begins
to advertise it sees this fact more
clearly than it ever saw it before
In the little district of Bord-de
la-Mer France which relies for its
prosperity upon the trade of tour
ists the courts not long ago heard
one of the most interesting trials in
history
The village of Bord-de-la-Mer sued
several local merchants who were
charging excessive prices and in
this way causing prejudice to the
town and its more honest citizens
The merchants of the town who
advertised and made public their
desire to serve at lower prices felt
that unscrupulous merchants were
discrediting the entire town The
city fathers took it up They sued
They won their case
Every day similar cases are being
tried in the court of public opinion
Any merchant who wants to succeed
must make sure he is living up to
his good name and his obligation
to deal fairly with his customers
You are the judge of these cases
you consumers Your decision is
final
