I am looking forward to my trip
A this Saturday to the 45th Divis-
ion's summer encampment at Ft
Hood Texas -
No state in the 48 can look
with greater pride oil its National
Guard or state militia than can
' Oklahoma on its much-honored I
Thunderbird division Since the
organization of the parent unit'
the First Infantry Regiment at 1
Guthrie in the 1890's through both
World Wars and the Korean bat-
tles this organization has set a
magnificent example for other mil-
itary groups It isn't surprisingi
that the late General George S
Patton told 45th men who accomp-
anied him in the Sicily campaign!
In 1943: " your division is I
one of the best if not the best
division in the history of Ameri-
can arms"
The Oklahoma national guard is
made up of citizen soldiers who
for the most part are heads of
families They leave their Jobs for
two weeks each year to serve the
nation to train for the eventual
possibility of fighting for their own !
families and yours and mine In I
a great many cases their em-
ployers do not count this as Va-
cation time 'so that the men may 1
also have their deserved period
of rest each 'year I'd like to take
this Importunity to urge all em-
ployers to allow the Guardsmen
the time off for their military
training as well as their regular
vacations I believe an increasing
number of patriotic-minded busi-
nesses are doing this each year
The best isn't a bit too good
for the 45th That was of course
your state government's feeling
when it recently completed carry-
ing out a longtime hope of the
men and officers of the 45th and
permitted the organization to oc-
cupy as its own home headquart-
ers the large armory on 23rd street
in Oklahoma City moving other
departments out of the building
so that the Guard cold "call its
home its own"
' So to General Hal Muldrow and
this citizen soldiers 7 know '11'm
speaking on behalf of every Okla-
homan when I express gratitude
for the service you are render-
ing our state and our nation and
for the greater confidence and
feeling of security you are help

NEW FURNITURE
SEBREE Ky — The Rev
Ray Thompson a Baptist minis-
ter and his wife returned from
a trip out of town to find their
living room furniture had been re-
placed with spanking new pieces
of furniture
Stunned but pleasantly so they
soon learned that members of the
pastor's church had made the
switch on the sly
vice again in 1940 they were sent I
to Sicily Salerno Anzio France
and Germany in one of the most 1
formidable series of 'battles in
history finally ending in the fall
of Hitler's tyranny and then they
went in 1951 to Korea where they I
brought new glory to their flag i
and their uniform in four summer
and winter campaigns against the
newest threat to a peaceful world
the communists
Oklahomans Americans and all
citizens of the free world have
reason to be proud of the citizen
soldiers of the 45th division
