WHEN Ricky left the house
" that afternoob and turned
toward town he knew what he
' was going to do He didn't dare
- put it In words or allow hunsell
to think it out step by step
Every time he wanted to do
something they had to go through
that otd routine about his wel
fare and what was best tor it
It sure was funny that it always
turned out the best thing for his
welfare was what they liked As
though his welfare was some-
thing they kept in a safe or
something
Ricky loped along with his
fists 'clenched the rebellion in
him growing with every step
Maybe the only way to let his
parents know that he was grown
up was to prove it Other guys
did som eh o w Other guys
weren't treated the same at 16
as they were at six
: "What would they say?" Ricky
demanded of himself in a fierce
- whisper "Suppose I just drove
home in my car and said it was
mine and I was going to keep
t? Couldn't say anything It's
my money They wouldn't kick
me out either They'd just have
Xi accept it that's all"
He was moving toward the
aank thumbs hooked in his belt
?yes narrowed against the sun
He went up the three stone
iteps slowly uncertainly almost
(loping something would happen
to stop him
Annie Myers the assi3tant
7ashier was eating her lunch at
a table near the 'vault door He
stood at the teller's window
watching her The bank was
merely one big room divided by
a partition not more than five
feet high
A NNIE heard him and looked
around She was a small
woman of about 60 with a pale
face and bushy hair that had
faded from red to light orange
"Do you want' something?"
There was an unconcealed note
of annoyance in Annie's voice
She didn't like to be disturbed
during her lunch
"I I want to draw out some
money" Ricky said still staring
at Annie
"Does your father know you're !'
taking this money out?"
Annie's sharp voice her speak-
ing as to a mall child angered
him " '
"I'm not asking for my father's
money" Ricky blurted his voice
loud and belligerent beyond his
control "I'm asking for mine I
put it in by myself so I guess I
can draw it out by mysell"
Annie was disconcerted She
knew Ricky never did anything
important without his father's
assistance His anger frightened
her
"You needn't think you can
stand there and shout at me"
she said shrilly "I've a mind to
call your father right now and
tell him "
"You just keep away from
that phone and give rue my
money" Ricky ordered The
harsh tough voice that was com-
ing out of his mouth sounded
strange and frightening
The annoyance in Annie's eyes
gave way to a quick look of fear
She had read about the crazy
things that boys did And it was
always the nice ones who sud-
denly went berserk
"How much do you want?"
Annie asked taking care to keep
back where he couldn't grab
her

way he had talked to old Annie

"Alights- good car" Merle saki
that new
voice "I have to buy something
important"
"Well don't just stand there"
Annie said Her fright over she
was her old snippy self again
"You know enough to make out a
withdrawal slip Hurry now I
want to have some time to finish
my lunch"
TT was a block away from the
' square on a side street and it
didn't look like the kind of
garage you'd want to take a new
car to A big unpainted frame
building with a red gas pump in
front and rusted scraps of junk
piled along the outside walls In
the weedy lot next to the garage
with a hand-lettered FOR SALE
sign on the windshield was the
car
It was a '39 Ford coupe origi-
nally black but now the rusty
shade of an old tophat It didn't
matter that the fenders were bat-
tered and rusted through—they'd
come off And if the door on
the driver's side had to be wired
shut that was all to the good It
wouldn't be so likely to fly open
so he'd be thrown out if he hap-
pened to roll the car on a turn
He opened the good door let-
ting out a rush of hot air that
smelled of dust old upholstery
and metal He felt the usual
momentary disappointment that
the gearshift lever was on the
floor not up under the wheel
But he comforted himself with
the thought that the fancy sports
cars like the Jags and the Nash
Ilealeys had their gear boxes on
the floor '
He slid under the wheel sitting
on lose and broken springs star-
ing forward through a wind-
shield that was pitted and dis-
colored from the ravages of
weather
He sat behind the wheel
dreaming and planning until
Merle Connor returned to the
garage from lunch driviog an an-
cient tow-truck Merle saw
Ricky in the coupe and it being
too hot to start work right away
he strolled over to the car to
kid Ricky with a sales talk
Merle was in his thirties a
dispirited man in baggy brown
coveralls and a greasy red lea-
ther cap he wore winter and
summer He was always renting
some old building or shack and
starting up some kind of fix-it
service He had been through
lawnmowers and sewing ma-
chines and electrical work and
now he had a garage
Merle leaned against the wired
dor of the coupe
"Mighty good car here" Merle
said thumping the tinny door
with his fist "Just got her in
and she'll pr6bably be sold this
afternoon Showroom conditiop
Still has that new smell"
The car had been sitting there
for months
"She's a nice one all right"

"Showroom condition Still has
smell"
ing wheel Merle Connor
yawned He hated to go back
to work but he was bored
with the talk They'd gone over
the same ground a hundred
times "Kid" he said tired of
everything "if you want this car
so much why don't you buy it?"
"Maybe I will buy it" Ricky
said
Merle had heard that before
"When? The year NOG?"
"Maybe right now" Rick y
said afraid to listen to himself
Merle straightened up He
caught the Sound of money in
Ricky's tone
"Your pa would skin you alive
if you bought a car" Merle said
"You know that"
II ICKY reached in his pocket
and pulled out his money
He held the bills up In front of
Merle's face "Who you listening
to?" Ricky demanded his voice
aggressive and shaky "This or
what you think my father would
say?"
Merle shot a quick look at the
money "That don't look like $65
to me" he said disinterestedly
Ricky looked hurt "I thought
the price was fifty"
Merle chuckled in a way to
indicate that Ricky was talking
like a child "Kid" he S'aid "you
just don't know about car prices
They've gone up since the last
time I talked to you There's a
big demand for good used cars
now A big demand Matter of
fact $65 is pretty cheap for this
car" An adult could have bought
the car for $25 and he'd be glad
to get rid of it but these kids
were different When they got
the- fever for a particular car
they wanted it
"Yeah" Merle said turning his
back on Ricky "I turned down
sixty for it this morning The
market's real good now Real
good" He turned again sud-
deny hoping to catch Ricky off-
guard but Ricky made no at-
tempt to conceal the hopelessness
luzt felt If he hadn't been sure
he wanted the car he was sure
now Now that somebody else
would probably buy it
"Fifty's all I got" Ricky said
dully looking at the money in his
hand as though it had betrayed
him "Well if it ain't enough I
guess it just ain't enough" He
slid across the seat and got out
of the car his lower lip protrud-
ing Merle shook his head These
kids! No effort to bargain No
brains He walked around the
car to join Ricky "Well it's
enough to buy her with even if it
ain't enough to buy her 'all"
Merle said "Of course I hate to
do business that -Way All that
extra trouble and book work and
forms to fill out
Ricky looked at the coupe
thinking hard "I'll pay $50 dowr
and the rest a dollar a week"

thing was to keep the price down
to what he was sure the kid
would be able to pay It could

Merle said reluctantly leaning
against the coupe "Sixty-five
was the cash price On terms it
would have to be $75 Book work
and all that stuff And I think
that other feller might be back

"I guess not" Ricky said All

"You won't regret it" Merle
said taking Ricky's $50 and
tucking the bills in his overalls

you can probably turn right

Ricky followed Merle into the

up with the other guys He was
as big and as independent as any-
body even his father The
difference between a kid and a
Man was something you had to
discover for yourself
WHEN Ricky walked out of the
" garage toward his car he
noticed things that had escaped
his attention before Now that
he had $50 in the car and
owed another $25 he saw for
the first time that the tires were
so bald the cord showed in
patches on two of them There
was a sag to the left that sug-
gested a broken spring and an
appearance of being out of line
that indicated the car had been
wrecked and maybe had a
sprung frame '
He climbed in the car care-
fully wiping his feet on the grass
outside before placing them on
the filthy floorboard He held the
key tightly between the thumb
and forefinger of his right hand
and his hand trembled as he in-
serted the key in the ignition
lock He turned the key shoved
in his clutch and kicked the
starter
It wouldn't start
Merle Booked out e) t the ga-
rage "What's the matter?" he
yelled "Can't you start?"
"She won't c a t c h" Ricky
looked hopefully at the mechanic
Merle strolled toward the car
with maddening slowness He
poked his head inside and looked
at the dash "For one thing" he
said laconically "you're out of
gas I had about a gallon In the
tank but I guess one of your
friends must have took it"
"Gas" Ricky said feeling like
a fool "Yeah"
Ricky felt in his pockets - Not
even enough for a gallon He'd
hoped Merle would offer to fill
the tank for free as a gesture
in honor of the purchase but he
was afraid to suggest that gen-
erosity to Merle

took their cue from Sherm and
gathered around too
"Awe you know" Ricky said
loudly so that Sharon would
hear "I hit the turn too fact
when I kicked her she didn't
have enough dig to bring me
around " Ricky made a
careless gesture with his hand
e
'FINK ALLER winked at the
-I-4 others "I didn't know this
heap could go fast enough to
slide gravel" he said touching
the coupe with his booted toe
"I've had it on the road It's a
real turtle"
For a moment Ricky felt like
walking away and leaving them
and his coupe but he knew that
would be too childish "I won't
argue with you" he said trying
to sound uninterested "But I'm
In the ditch and I need some
help to get out You guys want
to help me out or prove I
couldn't be there in the first
place?"
It was the right thing to say
This time they laughed with him
and moved to help
Sherm backed his car around
until it was near enough to be
hooked to Ricky's coupe by
chains Ricky got in his car and
started his motor With his car
in reverse Sherm towing and
the other boys pushing by hand
he was soon back on the road
The chains were unhooked and
the boys gathered to hear the
sound of Ricky's motor and dis-
cuss his car They were pleased
that he had wheels but it wasn't
their way to come right out and
say so Their way of welcoming
Ricky was to rib him
"I know she's not perfect"
Ricky said seriously as he
gunned the motor and a cloud
of blue smoke rolled out of the
exhaust pipe "But at least I've
got my own rod"
"Rod!" Chub howled wrin-
kling his round face in dismay

I"How about adding a s
worth to my account?" Ri-ky
asked trying to sound casual
Merle hesitated "Well all
right" he said reaching for the
hose
Ricky got back in his car with
a feeling of relief Once was all
he'd need of Merle's cheap gas
After this he would be getting
the best ethyl gas from one of
the good stations and after that
he'd be burning his own fuel
mixture
This time the car started Ricky
let it idle a moment to warm up
Also to give himself time to get
up nerve to put the car in gear
and drive away It wasn't that
he didn't know how to drive
He'd driven his friends' cars
enough to have confidence in his
ability Ile didn't know where
to go
A happy inspiration struck
him The lake!
s
ITE started the car driving to-
''' ward the lake In low gear
he tromped on the gas pedal
tearing the insides of his car as
his wheels spun in the loose
gravel In second he held it wide
open trying to find out how fast
it would go in that gear Thirty-
nine! A miserable crawling
creeping shuddering waver-
ing 39!
The car kept trying to leap off
the left side of the road but he
gritted his teeth and fought it
back Another turn came up
Turns were frequent on this back
road He glared at it as though
it were a personal enemy This
time like a race driver!
He hit into the turn with In-
ertia in full contempt of his at-
tempts to pull his front wheels
around Because he could slide
he didn't roll but he was sliding
toward the ditch his hands glued
to the useless wheel
He felt his wheels leave gravel
for grass The rear wheels
touched first were slowed and
the front end of the car slammed
around to head toward the fields
Momentum carried the car for-
ward throwing Ricky from side
to side as the coupe left the road
and headed into a shallow broad
ditch
(To Be Continued)
as the fumes enveloped him
"You don't call this a hot rod
do you? Man it's more like a
warm stick"
"Well let's get on back to
town" Link said "Want a tow
Ricky?"
"I'll get there" Ricky snapped
"You might—if I pushed you"
Link teased with a proud look
at his convertible It was bright
yellow with chrome exhaust ex-
tensions and Buick portholes
along the hood
Ricky looked sullen but didn't
answer After all the waiting
and torment and all the trouble
he was in the big moment of
his life had come and it had
been flat
Only Jerry Long stayed by him
as the others moved toward their
cars Quiet thoughtful Jerry
who was his best friend
"How did you get your dad to
okay it?" he asked
Ricky didn't look up "I
didn't" he said
"That's not so good"
Ricky lifted his head "Why
not? You guys all did the same
thing didn't you? If it was good
for you why isn't it good for
me? I'm not a kid any more
Can't you see?"
TERRY scuffed the gravel with
0 the toe of his shoe "I had
to fight for mine" he said "but
my dad agreed before I went and
bought it"
"I tried it that way" Ricky
said "You know my folks They
didn't say yes and they didn't
say no I I don't know what
they said"
"Maybe you should have wait-
ed" Jerry said "Anyway you
could have done better than this
car What did Merle try to
stick you for it? Last I heard
it could be had for 25 bucks"
"I made a good deal" Ricky
said mentally kicking himself
"We've been buddies a Nig
time" Jerry said "I know when
you're faking What was it
thirty-five?"
"Worse" Ricky admitted look-
ing ashamed "Forty"
"You've got to learn not to go
off half-cocked See you in
town" Jerry walked to his car
shaking his head
