IBY JANE EADS
WASHINGTON' - — Among the
first American women whom re-
leased American prisoners of war
saw upon arrival in Tokyo was
a tall young woman with a sunny
smile and freckles ready to give
the mthe kind of food they han-
kered for
Capt Mary Lipscomb chief of
the Food Service Division of the
American Army Hospital in Tokyo
knew just what kind of food sick
soldiers should have and what to
put on their plates to perk up
their spirits She had been at the
hospital since July 1950 the first
Army dietitian assigned to the Far
East after hostilities began in Ko-
rea On busy days she had taken
care of the food wants of from
1800 to 1900 patients During World
War II she served 17 months as
dietitian on a hospital ship mak-
ing 10 round trips to Scotland
Englsnd North Africa Italy and
France
"The released POWs like the
boys who had been in combat
were mighty glad to get back to
some fresh milk and fresh eggs
and when they were ready for a
full diet they went for steak roast
beef chicken and pastries" s h e
told me while on leave here
Former American and other UN
prisoners of the Communists were
offered milk and fruit juice after
the doctors had looked them over
she said and "It was interesting
to note they first chose fruit juice
which showed they had had a lack
of fruits In the prison camps"
"It was a case of Mother Na-
ture's taking care of their needs
by giving them a taste for fresh
fruits" Captain Lipscomb said 1
"Most of them had ice cream twice
a day We gave them a choice I
of foods Anything they wanted we
tried to get for them One young
man asked for ham and eggs
There were requests for straw-
berry shortcake and chocolate pie
Many said they had been living on
rice rations and water bean soup"
Capt Lipscomb says Army ra-
tions are improving all the time
and now even in Korea are ex-
cellent ''Some boys say the closer
they get to the front the better
the food" she said
Capt Lipscomb born in Clio
S C majored in home economics
at the South Carolina College for
Women and took her hospital die-
tetics internship at Vanderbilt Un-
iversity hospital at Nashville term
She entered the army in Decem-
ber 1943 Her brother Lt Co
Lafar Lipscomb a West Point
graduate is stationed at Ft Bliss

PEKISOKO Alta — The Duke
of Windsor's EP Ranch in the Al-
berta foothills' 65 miles southwest
of Calgary has gone back to com-
mercial cattle raising
For 31 years after the then prin-
ce of Wales bought the 4000-acre
ranch in 1919 it was a purebred
stock farm producing shorthorn
cattle Shropshire and Hampshire
sheep Clydesdale horses and thor-
oughbred running horses
After the Duke visited the EP
Ranch in 1950 with the'Duchess of
Windsor the property reverted to

TRAVELING FUN
141 Newsfeatures
Vacations arefun but the travel
involved may be painful if you
don't plan in ad-Vance to keep the
children amused during the trip
Whether you go by plane train
or automobile it is wise to lay
in a supply of toys and games
that will keep the youngsters oc-
cupied Such things as coloring
books puzzles travel record books
and stencil books are available
in most toy departments these
days
A favorite doll provided in ad-
vance with a travel wardrobe which
must be changed at appropriate
hours of the day often keeps a
little girl happy during a long trip
The travel record book has pages
to be filled in with a sort of daily
travel diary — time mileage po-
ints of interest and so on space
also is provided for snapshots tak-
en during the trip
