ENCOURAGING A RIGHT START
Concerns connected with the automobile industry
those companies that build fast automobiles and others
that are financing and helping get them en the highways
and into the hands of drivers are coming to realize a
moral obligation in the conservation of life and property
The Commercial Investment Trust one of the nation's
biggest car financing concerns has estahlished the (7 I T
Safety foundation anti is spending thousands of dollars
throughout the nation every year in the promotion of
safety The company admits frankly that the work is
good advertising that the cost can lw charged off to pub-
lic relations
But at the same time
e it is conscious of the part it is
'taking in placing on the highways machines that can he
and are proving to be dangerous and deadly It can see
the cold facts in figures of the thousands of persons Aviv)
are dying every year in automobile accidents and it is
Ak
illing to accept safety promotion as an obligation and
to spend money to save lives
The Ford Motor company also is accepting such an
obligation coming forward with a plan to promote sitity
education among youngsters who are just learning to drive
an automobile and are yet to become truly conscious or
the dangers they face behind the wheel The company
believes the youngster who learns to drive carefully and
safely NVill continue the practice as an adult driver
So it is organizing the Good Drivers league for drivers
between 14 and 18 yuars of age It is offering prizes total-
ing $30000 in scholarships this year in a nation-wide con-
test and to prepare these young drivers for competition
is sending them literature on -limy to Becomo a Skilled
Driver" encouraging them to become acquainted with the
simple rules and courtesies of the road
The contt'st is open to local youngsters There is
catch or obligation connected with it The competition
first will be on a stale-wide basis and the Ntate inners
will receive free trips to Nt'W yrii city to compete on Au-
gust 26 They Nvill be guests of the 100:ne mm NeW York
city for five days
Other commercial concern!- arc taking a part in the
nation-wide safety campaign Ve particularly 1Ue thoso
that are encouraging young drivers to kart) to drive
properly and safely --- for it is whilo they are tearing
that their waYs and Practices are being fixed Wlom these
