He helped carry me over to the

While on the trip I saw about 150

Stanfield here was speaking of
plans for prospecting for platinum
with his uncle C B Atwell After
returning from the hills to Plat-
inum he wrote:
"Well I just returned from the
hills five days ago and have been
working like everything Started
out of here by plane and flew thir
be centered upon efforts of other
townships to grab the agricultural
exhibit championship title held for
many years by Clayton township
And it is apparent that the Clay-
tcn exhibitors who produced the
state's first-place exhibit last
year to break the nine-year win-
ning record of Seminole county
are going to face plenty of trouble
at home before they get a chance
to defend the 1939 championship
at approaching state shows
With fine crops in all sections
of the county the Clayton exhibi-
tors are going to have the biggest
run for their money that they
have had in years the farm agent
believes
Frizes totaling approximately
$3000 will be awarded to winners
in all divisions of the free fair
It's no doubt cruel to stab at
popular delusions stir up so many
people to the disagreeable activity
Of thinking Here goes though:
Dr Harry R De Silva research
expert has just finished a tsury
of 3000 motorists picked practic-
ally at random from among Con-
necticut's motoring population in
an effort to find out how much
there really is in the popular be-
lief that women are far worse
drivers than men
Dr De Silva's statistics boil down
to this: That in this cross sec-
tion of 3000 motorists women
drive about half as much mileage
as men but get into only one-
third as many accidents
Which shows the doctor un-
feelingly points out "that women
are still safer drivers and that
they do not have fewer accidents
merely because there are fewer
women drivers"
In case its objected that the
doctor didn't study enough driv-
ers to get a true picture there is
the gritty fact that in the auto
accidents which took about 32-
600 lives in this country last year
only 66 per cer4 of the drivers in-
volved were women
Here's one crumb of comfort
for the men though From our
observation when you do see a
bum lady driver leaping from lane
to lane and performing signals
that aren't she's worse than any
man driver you ever see any-

Many will be the words of sor-

great coach lost to the Aggies
Here are some early comments
LeRoy McGuirk one Gallagher's
greatest wrestlers:
The game little guy who will al-
ways be a symbol of Aggie athlet-
ics Edward Clark Gallagher clos-
ed his eyes and quietly slipped
away at the St Anthony's hospi-
tal here today in much the same
manper as was his custom to slip
from the back door of the college
gymnasium and leave the back
slapping and fan worship to his
pupils after they had scored one
of their many important wrestling
victories The beloved "Old Man"
went as many of us believe he
would have liked It quietly and
peacefully and with mary of his
admiring lads gathered about the
hospital's corridors anxious for any
word of his condition

his boys at all times Whether in
their daily workouts or on the
bench during a match Ed always
had his boys gathered about him
eagerly awaiting the bit ot advice
and encouragement which he al-
ways had for each of them But
when the tough part was over and
the time for taking bows arrived
the soft spoken little fellow was
I never present for his bit
Found Ed in Bleachers
Once at a national tournament
at the New York Athletic club
several years ago when his pupils
had easily beaten the best in the
east the crowd began a great
clamor to see the man who had
developed such a team But Ed
was not to be found at his cus-
tomary ringside position and it
was only after one of the club of-
ficials had spied him sitting high
in the bleachers that he was haul-
fed from his perch and made to
get into the ring to receive a great
ovation
Like the old fire horse who re-
fused to give way for a motorized
unit Gallagher time after time re-
fused the college athletic council's
suggestion that he take it easy and
select an assistant to lighten his
duties and when the council final-
ly hired an assistant without his
consent he would have none GI it
and saw to it that his aide made
himself scarce at all times
1'as a Great Leader
Many of us old timers who have
stored away our orange and black
wrestling tights for the last time
have often tried to put our fingers
on the one thing which made Gal-
lagher the nation's foremost wres-
tling coach All are agreed that
Ed had something about him
something similar to the thing
that Knute Rockne must have had
to compile his great football rec-
ord at Noire Dame What it was
I was never able to discover but

whatever it was when old Ed
told you that you could do a
thing why you Just didn't think of
quitting until you had done it
Once when I was a skinny lit-
tle highschool kid weighing 125
pounds Oallagher came over to
Yale to referee a dual meet be-
tween Yale and Tulsa highschool
The Yale lad gave me an awful
ubbing that night and I was
a pretty heartbroken boy when
Ed put his arm around my shoul-
ders and walked me off the mat
"You must never feel badly about
lesing a match in which you have
given your best" Ed conflded
"Why you have to lose every now
and then to really appreciate what
it means to win Next year I'm
going to give you that state cham-
pionship medal after the Stillwa-
ter tournament" and the funny
part of it is that he did
It was Gallagher's leadership
and spirit which had as much to
do with turning out championship
wrestling teams as did his coach-
ing He would take some gawky
farmer lad and make him over in-
to the most polished mat per-
former to be found anywhere
Ile had a pet slogan which he
coined that became the by-law of
Aggie grapplers It went some-
thing like this:
"There never was a horse that
couldn't be rode and never a man
that couldn't be throwed"
It might not have boasted much
in grammar construction but it
went a long way in molding men
and unbeatable wrestlers

his record of 65 or 70 straight vic-

The match went into the final

single point It became my duty to

Old Ed tock me to II ly corner and
whispered in my ear "Give him
everything you've got and if you
can pin him do it but don't you
believe for a minute that this is
the end of everything Even if we
don't pin their ears back tonight
we'll do it doubly hard next sea-
