This Thanksgiving Oklahomans
have many things for which to be
grateful
Most of us have problems of one
kind or another a necessary part
of living But the state as a
whole particularly the various de-
partments of state government
are in excellent shape
Our State Welfare Department
for example will grant another
two-dollar per month across-the-board
increase next week to old-
age and blind pensioners It raises
t h e maximum possible payment
forsingle persons to S96 per
month and boosts maximum pos-
sible payments for a couple to
$140
This means an average increase
of $700 per month since I took
office It is possible because of a
sizeable increa se in the state's
sales tax collections
The census bureau says we con-
tinue to lose population in Okla-
homa If true it means those of
us remaining here with the excep-
tion of our farm population sel-
dom had it so good
I personally doubt these early
estimates of the census bureau
Wherever I look I see the state's
economy expanding
Our school population keeps in-
creasing by leaps and bounds We
should all be thankful the Better
Schools Amendment was approved
last spring assuring us proper fi-
nancing for our most rapidly ex-
panding school districts
I am personally grateful we
have been able to muster the
greatest road-building program in
the state's history Toll roads and
"free" roads are being built at a
faster rate than ever
They're coming none too quickly
I might add Clogged highways—
plus the death and destruction
they cause— remains Oklahoma's
and the nation's severest problem
I think we're fortunate the Su-
preme Court's edict on desegrega-
tion is being fulfilled logically and
without incident in Oklahoma It
indicates we are a reasonable law-
abiding people who accept change
gracefully
Our prospects for industrial ex-
pansion have never appeared bet-
ter Those making the recent
Eastern industrial tour came back
convinced Oklahoma is looked on
favorably as a future point of ex-
pansion by many firms large and
small
The state's tourist business con-
tinues to boom Local investors
know it and are putting money
into tourist attractions and ac-
commodations thus helping them-
selves to profit and others to get
jobs
All in all 1955 has been a good
year for Oklahoma Some of our
past dreams are becoming reality
thanks to real effort by many am-
bitious and forward-looking Okla-
homans I know all things are not yet
perfect but most of those who
will look about them this Thanks-
giving Day can count many bless-
ings in Oklahoma
