THE BOISE CITY NEWS
T HE Eisenhower administration
received another blow in the
battle with its biggest domestic
problem the farm-price pinch
The new blow was a report by the
Agriculture Departraeut that farm
prices have skidded another 2 per
cent It drops tin 1armer to the
lowest rung be has occupied on the
economic ladder since 1941
The situation is termed "grave"
by GOP policy makers and espe-
daily those GOP candidates who
must win their contests in 1954
AU agree that something must be
done or the Democratic party is
going to sweep through the farm
belt in the 1954 elections The re
suit could well be that the country
would have a Democratic controlled
congress
The farm prices situation Is this:
During the past month cattle prices
fell an average of 7 per cent a hun-
dred pounds They stood at 71 per
cent of parity
Prices paid out by farmers from
mid-September to mid-October fell
one-third of one per cent But since
the farmer's prices fell even more
the net result was that he was less
well off
Average farm prices stood at 91
per cent of parity on October 15
the lowest since May 1941 That
compared with 92 per cent of parity
on September 15 and 99 per cent
a year ago The over-all farm-price
picture on October 15 was about
114 per cent below a year ago
while farmers costs were only
about 3 per cent below the same
time last year
Holidays Hold Added
Danger for Children
Holidays can be dangerous days
for the youngsters The menace
is fire
Actually fire is a year-round
threat to children—their No 1
killer in home accidents But at
this time of year added seasonal
hazards increase the danger Ex-
cited and over-tired youngsters
are especially vulnerable to the
dangers of loosely woven costumes
and party dresses decorative can-
dles unsafe toys and Christmas
trees
Protect them advises the Na-
tional Board of Fire Underwriters
by following these simple fire
safety suggestions:
I Flameproof children's clothing
made of loosely woven materials
Dip such garments in a solution of
9 ounces of borax and four ounces
of boric acid to a gallon of water
Wring by hand then hang to dry
Flameproofing will last until the
clothes are laundered then it must
be repeated U s e it on doll's
clothes too as well as adults'
clothing drapes or any washable
fabric
2 Remember candles are dan-
gerous at any time—but particu-
larly when there are children
around Electric candles are just
as effective in decorating and
much safer
3 When buying electrical toys
of any type always look for the
UL label It means the toys have
passed Underwriters' Laboratories
tests for fire and shock hazards
As an added saf ety measure
supervise play with even safe elec-
trical toys
4 Some types of toys such as
those involving flame or pressure
should not be given to little child-
ren Others such as chemical
sets should be selected with care
and play with them should be
supervised
5 Choose a small Christmas
tree—they're less dangerous than
large ones—and keep it outdoors
until a few days before Christmas
Stand it in water or use a live
tree planted in a tub of earth
Never use cotton or paper on or
around the tree Place the tree
In a cool part of the house awfv
from fireplaces or radiators and
don't let it block an exit Use only
electric lights rrIver candles and
see that the wires are not frayed
Provide a switch away from the
tree for turning lights on and off
Never plug or unplug them be-
neath the tree Don't leave the
lights burning when no one is
home When needles start to
fall take the tree down
6 Never leave children at home
alone!
Last year nearly 1300 children
under five years old were killed
by fire Deaths a”ong the 5-14
age group brought the total up to
1700 In this season any season
keep the children safe

Meanwhile the cattle industry
Is unhappy with the results of the
caravan of cattlemen representing
30 states that recently visited Sec-
retary of Agriculture Benson in
Washington
Benson let it be known that be
considers such a group a "pres-
sure" group and that be will re-
sist all pressure political or oth-
erwise against his announced pol-
icy This policy is an adjustment
of price-support programs to meet
basic economic and peacetime
needs in the best interests of all
American farmers
It is believed in Washington that
this fight of the cattlemen for high
rigid price-support for their indus-
try is not over and may be car-
ried to the next session of con
gress It will be a "bad break" for
the administration if the fight be-
comes a knock-down and drag
out affair
President Eisenhower b very con
scious of the situation This is
evidenced by his recent statement
that the drop in live-cattle prices
has reached the bottom and they
will now start to climb Ile vigor
ously defended his administra
tion's new farm program and said
it will protect the interests of all
Americans including consumers
He rejected a suggestion that he
call a special session of congress
to deal with the general farm sit-
uation Ile said it would not make
sense because the administration
will not have its Program ready
until January
