R USS EL was worried about Red
Had been ever since the night
before at Tonelli's Red drank
vhen they were in the Army
Sometimes he drank too much
But never until he became sodden
as he had been last night
Russ knew that something must
be plenty wrong for Red to act
as he was And he himself felt a
measure of guilt for it If he
hadn't been so wrapped up in his
own personal problems he'd have
been seeing more of Red He'd
have known then what was both-
ering him
Well it wasn't too late to cor-
rect the last situation
He caught Red just as he was
leaving the lab Tapped him on
his shoulder and when Red
turned around:
"Red what about coming out to
the house for dinner tomorrow?
Janice my sister wants to meet
you"
Red said that would be all'right
with him and asked what time
"We have dinner about 4 on
Sundays" Russel said "It will be
just the family—and Elise"
That checked Red If he hadn't
already said he'd go he'd have re-
fused the invitation It seemed he
was to have Elise Varney in his
hair wherever he went
Elise dressed for dinner at the
Condons that Sunday slowly and
with the loving care a woman

maudlin self pity
Elise: with ferninine intuition
-guessed at least part of what had
happened She reached out with
one of her hands and touched his
"Of courte we don't think we're
too good' for you" she said Red's
senses were clearing He sat up
straighter He felt that he had
been making a fool of himself and
suddenly he was ashamed of his
behavior
"I'm sorry" he said distinctly
And then with a rather painful
dignity "I'm all right now You
l and Russ go on"
"I'll drive you home" Russ said
Red shook his head "No I'll
be all right now"
e e
I TE Sat on long after they
1' left him Once he touched the
the place on his big hand where
Elise had laid her cool slim one
It was the first time she had
shown any ordinary human kind-
ness to him and for a moment
he Was moved
And then quickly came the
thought "Sher was sorry for me
---that's what it was Sorry for
me because my girl threw me
over" It was gal) to-his wounded
pride "Well the devil with that
I don't need anybody feeling sorry
for me"
Unfortunately he carried this
belligerent air to work with him
the next morning To Elise's
warmer than usual greeting be
grunted a sour reply and listened
impatiently while she explained
the test they were going to run
that morning
Wrapped up in his own hljured
feelings he didn't listen closely
to what she was saying What the
heck he'd run these tests before
she was heard of in the laboratory
He carried the samples over and
put them in the baking ovens and
adjusted the temperature He
expectation Purely intuition She
felt that this 'night was going to
be important—very important in
her life
Her thoughts were all of Rus-
sel as she dressed The irritation
and the strange disturbance Red
Mckan sometimes raised in her
emotions were all forgotten—
sweated out in the hours she had
worked overtime the day before
because of his mistake in timing
the samples of the new lacquer
But that didn't matter now
Russel called and said Janice
wanted her to come over early
Janice was engaged to be married
and Elise was to be her maid-ofhonor
There were a lot of plans
to be talked out
Elise said: "All right I'm ready
now Come on over and get me"
QIIE and Janice were closeted in
1-7 the latter's bedroom until din-
I ner was announced Then they
went down to join the men in the
stately rather old-fashioned din-
ing room
After dinner they had coffee
and liqueurs in the living room
Then Arthur Condon excused him-
self and went into his study The
four young people were left alone
Russ brought out an album of
snapshots — snapshots from the
war that he had just finished
mounting All four sat on the
deep couch before the cheerful
open fire and looked at them
Red laughed and pointed to one
picture It showed Russ outside a
flimsy tent shaving A helmet
propped up on a tripod arrange-
ment served as wash-stand
"That was taken in Corsica
wasn't it?" Red asked "Remem-
ber that rainstorm we had there
and how we were all wading
around with our pants rolled to
our knees trying to keep our stuff
from being washed down the
mountain and but to sea"
Russ laughed too remembering
Elise listening wondered how

going to say you'd have me tired -
—was that it?" ! !
"I ' certainly can't work with
you if you won't do as you're told"
Elise said spiritedly
"Boy you think you run this
place don't you "
For a moment they glared at
each other Hate flashing from
both pairs of angry eyes And
4
then something happened to Elise
She was suddenly aware of his
vitality his magnetism as she had
been that night on the dance floor
Suddenly aware that her anger at
him wasn't an authentic anger—
that she got a thrill out of fighting
with him
Flushed and disturbed she
'
turned her back on him Still
without looking at him still pre-
tending to be very busy she saki:
"I'm sorry Red I said what I
did I had no business to You do
your work and I'll do mine Let's
start all over now on these sampies"
(To Bo Continued)
they could laugh so easily And
then decided that perhaps that was
how men survived ward Hanging
grimly onto their sense of humor
But there wasn't always some- -
thing to laugh at For instance
in the next picture Red and Rus-
set lingered over "That's Jim
Ro Hey" Russ said- pointing to a
curly-headed boy beside a plane -
'I was with him the day he
went in" Red said klis voice was
suddenly tense and tight "Did I
ever tell you about it?" "
Russ shook his head ' " - "''"
"There were just the two of us
They got Jim right over the tar-
get Part of one wing of his plane
was torn eft I kept talking to
him over the radio He said he
couldn't bail out—that he was
caught I'll never forget how
calm his voice was His plane
was going down in big fiat cir-
cles 'It's all right Red' he
said 'All right There's nothing
to it'"
Janice gave a little moan Elise
was conscious that she was hold-
ing her breath—that she had been
holding it for a long time
"The next minute he was dead
there on the ground - I circled
until I saw his plane burning
There was nothing I could do"
Red finished and there was that
in his voice that suggested a dam
of feeling deep sensitive feeling
held back by masculine control
Elise looked at him This was a
new Red a Red she had never
before suspected
The discovery troubled her the
rest of the evening
It drove her to a partial con-
fession later when Russ was driv-
ing her home "I'm afraid I've
been wrong about your friend
Red I—I didn't think he ever felt
anything until tonight"
Russ looked at her 'quickly'
"Don't let that hard-boiled front
of his fool you Red has plenty of
feeling He just doesn't put it on
parade"
And then Russ changed the
subject He didn't want to talk
about Red McIan just then He
had something else on his mind—
something that to him was the
most important thing in the world
