NEW YEAR POEM
'Theodore Franklin Rudisill
The closing year has brought its toll
And we have made a record true
We would fold up that sacred scroll
And wish a better year for you
No tinging Le Ils can sound the cheer
We hope for you the coming year
Like inen of old whose eager feet
11oved on with firm and knowing tread
Who faced the tempest and the heat
Who never knew a cause was dead
So we like East winds eager thrill
Push on to that beyond the hill
With eager faces eager hearts
We face the corridor of days
And know the calendar of Arts
'Will open doors to tiresome ways
Lot every door along the year
Is open to a world of cheer
To men of blood and trust and mind
No thought of fear or dread may rise
We leave defeat and grief behind
Forget the painful sacrifice
And set our faces toward the goal
Which tries but magnifies the soul
So here's to you this glad New Year
Whatever comes to try or bless
We wish you joy though far or near
May yours be peace and happiness
Like eager Nvids set sure and true
May Hope attend the whole year through
THE TOWER LIGHT
Theodore Franklin Rudisill
There is never a traveler belated
Coming home in the dark of the night
Put is cheered by the city—elated
By the rays of the Tower Light
Be he stranger who passes our city
Or a native returning to town
MI are given a cheer and our pity
By the light when the sun has gone down
Far out on the broad open prairie
Whatever direction we roam
The light on the tower is cheery
Its rays are a straight path to home
The light on the tower is shining
Not alone as a lure in the night—
Its rays through the long night entwining
All hearts by its soft winsome might
And I know there's a light on the city
Where soon I shall seek my Repose
And the Keeper whose heart is all pity
Will welcome us all for Ile knows
And lie keeps the light shining far earthward
For the pilgrim oft lonesome and lost
And the gleam turns our weary steps homeward
Toward the city of Infinite Cost
JUST A LITTLE TOAST
TO OUR SWEETHEARTS
Theodore Franklin Rudisill
As lluman as Divine as man—
Or yet less human than divine
Thy sweethearts when the great god Pan
Controls the arrows of Sir Dan
To make thy sweethearts thine
In lover's thought no fairer bloom
Springs from terrestrial myraid life
A sweetheart true and pure heart
Controls the ethics of the mart
And cheers us in the strife
Ile Infinite of Everywhere
Who rules the day is Lord of night
Speaks in a sweetheart's fervent prayer
Redeems the man by woman fair
And turns him to the height
For brute in man must be serene
And God within a woman's heart
Still rules the man by tender mien—
Permits his manhood to be seen—
By vvoman's mystic art
God bless them women mother wife!
God bless our sweethearts everyone!
No brutish passion can run rife
No man can fail in manly strife
When woman's work is done
WHAT I KNOW ABOUT
WOMEN
Theodore Franklin Rudisill
My nephew came to me today
And be is very human
1st night he gave his heart away
Surrendered to a woman
lie asked that I should give advice
On marriage customs human
lie asked me plainly once or twice
About God's creature—woman
Now as a sage of eighty who
Should know all wisdom human
I told the lad a thing or two
But not a word of woman
He thanked me for my wise advice
On marriage customs human
And then he asked for something nice
About God's creature--woman
One thing alone I might have said
From all my history human
I know far more about the dead
Than sages know of woman
So I surrendered as a sage
King of the sages human
I gave the lad a blank white page
That's what I know of woman
