Did U Ever Stop to Think
NNIONOMOSIF
By Edson R Waite Shawnee Okla
That the holiday spirit is in
the air these days and it looks
as if Christmas is going to be
brighter and merrier than ever
this year Like the smallest
village or town in the country
even blase New York is a-flutter
I strolled down Fiftn Avenue
the other day and was much im-
pressed by the handsome displays
of holiday cards arranged by sev-
eralof America's leading jewelry
stores The book and stationary
marts the many quaint little
card shops the shopping section
are al! displaying new designs
and people are making their se-
lections early in order to get just
what they want and have their
names put on in plenty of time 1
to avoid the holiday rush More
so than with most things I un-
derstand you have to choose
Christmas cards early to get the
best selections
The 1928 cards seem bigger and
brighter than in the past and
there are more of them Many
of them reveal the modern art
influence which has struck furni-
ture and jewelry and has turned
kitchens and bathrooms into riots
of color
On the greeting cards it has
net gone so far as to represent
Christmas with two green trian-
gles and three red circles leaving
the rest to the imagination It
appears rather in Urignter color-
' ings and bolder lines on the fav-
orite designs The stage coaches
dash more vigorously down snowy
streets the skies are black and
have red sunsets to contrast
the country scenes purple ships
bounce over green oceans Christ-
mas trees blaze with big golden
candles They are all so cheer-
ful and modern and full of Amer-
ican vigor
The popularity of greeUng
cards not only for Christmas
New Year and other holidays as
well as birthday and graduation
day remembrance is constantly
increasing I learned in New
York from R W Hicks the
genial secretary of the Greeting
Card Association 'I here are sev-
eral explanations Mr Hicks said
Greeting cards are more desire-
ale in themselves than ever be-
fore as the foremost artists and
writers of the day are at work on
them through the year And the
habit of semAng cards has grown
automatically helped materially
by advertising
The slogan "Scatter Sunshine
with Greeting Cards" which is
seen so frequently in the news-
paper magazines and shop win-
dows is a constant suggestion to
the peoi)le to remember their
friends More people seem to be
doing it more often

PAVED HIGHWAYS ARE SAFE
Paved highways today are
much safer for the motoring
public than were the roads of a
few years ago due to several
things that have entered into the
building of roads and automo-
biles Today the greatest danger
lurks in those who drive into a
aved highway from the side-
1 roads and disregard the traffic
that iP sweeping by More ac-
cidents are caused today from
crossroads than from any other
source Motorists should always
remember that the travel-
ed highway has the right-of-way
especially if there is a stop sign
on the side road
A few years ago fast driving
was exceptionally dangerous on
all roads but today very few
accidents happen on good roads
due to fast driving Motor cars
were made to stand the high rate
of speed while a few years ago
motorists were pushing them be-
yond their limits
With the well made and well
balanced cars of today there
should be few accidents on the
straight road if every motorist
kept on his side of the road
maintained a pace consistant
with that of other vehicles and
took more care when coming out
of side roads
