FRIDAY JANUARY A 111
PAT ON THE BACK — A communication from Sports Illus-
trated the' nifty magazine devoted to the major and minor sports
of the natiOn informs that a forthcoming Issue willdevole its
"Pat on the Back" page to Oklahoma States baseball coach
Toby Greene
Toby is just back from New York and the annual meeting of
the American college baseball coaches at which he was awarded
the plaque U 1959 coach of the year Honors have come rather
thick and fast for Toby since that luippy night in Omaha It
June when homeruns by Jim Dobson and Ben Banerolt and a
clutch triple by Bruce Andrew sent the Cowboys of OSU roaring
to victory over Arizona in the final game of the collegiate world
series
Sports Illustrated is sending along another trophy for Coach
Creene the communication stated When we informed Toby
el this information Thursday he said "What for? I didn't hit
those extrahase blows" No and he didn't pitch that champion-
ship game either Toby Bensinger 'and Hick 'Soergel were out
there on the mound Maybe Toby they are sending you the
Sports Illustrated trophy for knowing the exact inning you should
pot in Soergel and which games were best for pitchers Joel
Itorlen and Roy Peterson Could it be that?
You would be interested to know we believe that all this
post-season attention IS embarrassing to Toby "Old Fungi)
Hitter" has never been one for show We want to tell you a little
' personal thing one of those tugging little things that make it
truly the wonderful world of sports
We learn from Sports Illustrated's man who had been es-
signed the job in New York of making the coach of the year
premntation 19 Coach Greene that a telegram had come to the
bead of the 'baseball coaches association It was a wire from
Creene'o wife Marie thanking the coaches for the honor
they had voted the OSU coach Mrs Greene had added "of
course he's my coach of the year every year" The guy read It
then introduced Greene
N'on nay have wondered why the wire stories out of New
N'ork Vednesday didn't carry anything on what the little coach
maid at the banquet Well he hardly Could say anythingThe gruff
little Irishman just stood there misty eyed guess you'd have
to sayhe stood there at the plate with the bat in his hands and

What with Myron Roderick earlier named wrestling coach of
the year Ralph Iliggina named to the USA Olympic coaching
