As the present letter is writ-
ten many Oklahoma drivers
are concerned over the recent-
ly announced decision of the
insurance commission that
liability rates would be going
up an average of 229 early
In December Then just short
ly before this writing it was
announced that the increase
would be postponed until later
In the month to give the
legislative council committee
an opportunity to look into
the matter as I suggested on
the recommendation of sev
eral legislators a waak or
two ago
My own reaction to this is
probably about the same as
everyone else's I hate to see
any costs go up I also felt
at first that it was a little
surprising that the companies
needed additional revenue in
view of the fact which I re-
marked on a few weeks ago
that the actual number of fa-
tal accidents per 100000-miles
are more cars driving more
miles every day so naturally
there are more accidents but
I had the impression the
number had not gone up pro
portionately
Weil on checking into this
a little I find that this sta-
tistic supplied by the Okla-
homa Highway Patrol refer-
red to fatal accidents not ac-
cidents as a whole Also the
costs of repairs have gone up
20 30 and even 50 for
some things in recent years
And the people who have the
accidents seem to be the ones
who get themselves insured
The companies indisputably
have been getting heavier
costs and the revenues have
not gone up in the same ra-
tio So I am suie the majority
members of the insurance
board Louis Woodruff and
Ralph Duroy were guided by
facts and a desire to keep
these companies solvent when
they decided after careful
study that the raises should
be granted
Several of our cities and kl
counties have outstanding l'41
safety records though and
are recognized for them all
over the country A good ex-
ample is Oklahoma county
which year after year has re-
ceived recognition for its per
mile driven record though I
believe it fell off just a bit in
the latest reckoning
Now it does seem as if dri-
vers in these areas should be
rewarded by the smallest pos-
sible increases if increases
( are necessary But critics of
1
the insuranc board decision
Including commissioner Joe nu
B Hunt who formed the mi-
nority of one in voting against
the increases have pointed
rates for Oklahoma Countains
will come to well above that
average of 229 This should
be carefully studied by the
legislative council at its meet-
ing which I think is on De
cember 17 dealing with the
Insurance question
Some legislators critical of
the increases have pointed out
that businesses so close to in-
solvency as to need the in-
creases in Oklahoma to keep
from going bankrupt are not
