"But the Texas League feels
that the game needs streamlining
for the benefit of the paying cus-
tomer and that this Jule will par-
tially serve that purpose" Butler
said "We want to experiment
with it for a year—serve as the
guinea pig so to speak
"We'll be the first to admit our
mistake if it doesn't pan out" he
added "But we want to try it
for a year sampling opinions of
fans and sports writers periodi-

it will speed up the game —

main complaints against baseball
in the days of dwindling gates"
The young Texas League 'execu-

was a sound one
"You don't have to practice in-

said "That's the time when the
managers want to look at their
pitchers and batters under fire—
and you don't intentionally walk
a man in practice"

Wall Coe in
Pro-Am Lead
By HAL WOOD
PEBBLE BEACH Calif (UN)
—Art Wall and Charley Coe two
of the skinniest guys in the upper
echelons of golf took a strangln
hold on the money and glory in
the $50000 Bing Crosby national
pro-amateur tournament Saturday
as they shattered par for the
third day in a row
Wall who averages a net of
about $1000 a week while making
his living "following the sun"
mastered Pebble Beach with a
two-under-par 70 for a 54-hole
total of 204
Veteran Jimmy Demaret who
had that great 64 Friday at Mon-
terey Country Club made a run
at Wall Saturday but couldn't
get a putt down on the last five
holes He came in with an even
six-team Class AA league were
trying to improve "the product of
baseball" and the automatic
wave to first would take away
one df the "dead spots"
"Someone said that the 'auto-
matic' would take away the fans'
chance to boo" Butler said
"They can still boo on the play"
The league in other moves to
speed up play banned the tradi-
tional round-the-infield peg of the
ball after an out and also sug-
gested that clubs move their bull-
pens up closer to the diamond to
cut down on the time needed to
replace pitchers
Butler said he planned to write
Frick and the chairman of the
rules committee setting forth the
reasons back of the league's plea
for permission to experiment with
the rule
"I also plan to talk to the com-
missioner on the telephone about
it—probably on Monday" he said
"It wouldn't affect either the
batter's or pitcher's averages in
any way" he said "I don't see
how it could possibly hurt to give
it a fair trial"
