From a business standpoint
Cklahoma's 1957 record looks
inighty good when compared with
many other areas of the nation
State tax collections indicate
this has been a better business
year than 1956 This is e daily
surprising when you consider the pecially for luxury goods
misfortunes which beset us early Small factories are leaving the
io the year
high rent high overhead cities
Spring floods put a standsstill 1nd moving to the wide-open

lishments For a time there was a notice-
able drop-off in tax collections as
a result The rebound has been
quick and certain however and
the state's tax take is consider-
ably above last yeat
Oklahoma tax collections show-
ed a $7-million increase during
he five months 'July through No-
vember About $4-million of this
amount was above what the tem-
porary 1-cent gasoline tax now
being discontinued brought in
Nearly all categories of collec-
tions show definite boosts Best
Indicator of general business the
sales tax is up nearly three per
cent over the same period last
year
Also encouraging is the 9 per
cent gross production tax in-
crease and the 14 per cent rise
in income tax collections They
make it clear that profitable bus-
iness is being conducted on a
wide scale throughout the state
This is heartening when we
read of layoffs in key industries
of the north and east Many
states are also feeling the pinch

I think there's no doubt our
recent success in attracting new
industries to the state is largely
responsible for us maintaining a
good level of prosperity In many
counties where small new com-
panies are starting operations it
is their first taste of manufac-
toring payrolls
Many of the industries we're
getting employ a high percentage
of women They are supplemen-
ting the faotily income by $50 or
$60 extra each week
