Lawnmowers
Dangerous
Se‘cral hundred Oklahomans will
suffer painful injuries this year be-
cause they fail to observe a tew
simple safety rules while operating
power lawn mowers says Dr De
Vitt Hunt ()Maim State univer-
sity safety specialist
About one in seven of these mower
mishaps will result ii irn1' perman-
ent disability says !hint with toes
feet and hands the most frequently
injured parts
Mower operators aren't the only
ones involved in mower accidents
he points out Three out of in in-
juries occur when persons are struck
by ohjects thrown by mower blades
Keep children and animals away
from areas being mowed he advises
and remove rocks bits of wire and
other such objects from lawn belorc
mowing
Turn off the mower motor and
let it cool before retueling says Hunt
and always refuel out-of-doors
Store fuel in a can equipped with a
flexible spout to insure easy pouring
Never store gasoline in a glass con-
tainer it might break spashing fuel
over worker and machine
Make sure all safety shields and
guards are in place I hint says
V-Belts should be fully enclosed aitil
the rotary blade balanced and
covered by guards
Stop the machine before making
any adjustment and before moving
it from one level to another Never
lem'e it unattended while the motor
is running
Cut sidways on bills and banks
says Hunt not up and dovi a the
slopes Make sure of footing espec-
ially when hitting on an incline
Electric mowers should be equip-
ped ‘‘iih a threewire cord to assure
)
proper grounding says Hunt Op-
erators should remember that mow-
ing with an electric machine is par-
ticularly hazardious when the ground
is wet
In fact he says consider all power
mowing a hazardous activity and
make every effort to Anticipate and
avoid accidents to the operator and
byst antlers
