Highway Patrol Troopers' Arrests
Total More Than 4000 In Month
FROM THE
NORTHWEST
CORNER
By Frank Dobyns
I
With all the rains we've had
this year fields are prettier right
now than at any time we can re-
member in a long Ome
We hadn't really noticed vei-
being usually too concern-
ed with 'kali a dozen other thing
on our mind at the same time but
the fact was brought home to us
very effectively last week
Ve had an Opportunity to fly
aver Luther and this territory in
a commercial air liner and took
great delight in looking over the
fields from a heighth of some
5000 feet
It was the first time we had ev-
r seen Luther from the air and
it proved to be quite interesting
to attempt to identify some of the
farms from an airplane
It gives a person an entirely
(LE' ferent aspect of a piece
of ground by seeing it
from this position You'd probab-
ly be surprised at how difficult it
is to recognize your own farm
from the air However it is an ex-
iellent viewpoint to look over soil
conservation problems and im-
tnediately gives an observer id-tas
about soil erosion remedies I
For those who sometime have
the opportunity we recommend
that you take such a flight and
get a real idea of how your place
looks from the air We'll guaran-
tee that it you haven't seen it be-
fore you'll get some different
impressions about your own
place Mrs Ed Rogers is adding some !

On the anniversary of Pearl
Harbor in 1945 a group of dis-
abled veterans met at Milford
Mass for an unusual ceremony
They were going to dedicate their
Chapter to a living disabled vet-
eran The disabled veteran Lawrence
J Heron was in the audience
still in uniform He could hear
very well everything that went on
—but he could not see Heron was
blind
The inspiration which caused
the members of the Lawrence J
Heron Chapter No 6 DAV to
depart from the usual tradition
of dedicating their Chapter to one
who had made the supreme sacri-
lice was the remarkable rehabil-
itation of Heron against great
odds
And now because of his ability
to cope with Bellows handicaps
caused by war service and become
self-sustaining the Disabled
American Veterans has selected
Heron as "The Hero of the
Month"
NATIONAL HONOR
This selection is a part of a
national program to honor each
month a seriously disabled vet-
eran who has successfully re-
habilitated himself
The experience of these men
and thousands of others accord-
ing to David M Brown national
DAV commando emphasizes the
importance of safeguarding the
rehabilitation program for dis-
abled veterans and not letting
false economy moves wreck the
program
Heron entered the armed forces
August 4 1943 Ile had been
working as a night watchman
for the Draper Corporation at
Hopeville Mass He had been a
three-letter man both in baseball
and football at St Mary's High
School in Milford and several
Colleges wanted such a promising
athlete but because of his father's
Bilrims be had to go to work
Today Heron is back with the
Draper Corporation tat in a

On June 26 1944 before Cher-
bourg Ileron a sergeant squad
leader with Company A of the
87th Chemical Battalion was
wounded in an explosion of white
phosphorus mortar shells It was
thought then that he would lose
only one eye but the caustic agent
burnt and destroyed the flesh of
his face and he lost both eyes
SO OPERATIONS
That wasn't all He bad to
undergo 30 operations to restore
his features which were destroyed
by the white phosphorus This
was a long and painful series of
operations but it was during
that time that Heron found he
had a rich pleasing voice He
sang to entertain his comrades
in the hospital
From Valley Forge Hospital
be went to Ovon Connecticut a
rehabilitation center for blinded
veterans Here he learned to read
Braille and to do leatherwork and
woodwork He improved his voice
too and no concert was complete
without Heron
He was discharged from the
hospital on December 21 1945
But two weeks before that be had

comrades dedicated the DAY
Chapter in his tame
When Heron reentered civilian
life the first thing was to make
a borne for the girl he had mar-
ried two months before going in
the service His wife the former
Azelia Noferi of Hopeville bad
never wavered in her decision to
stand by him Today they halts

times a year and entertains them
