July 28
There is one big factor which Ls
entirely unpredictable in the sen-
ate race—the efficiency with which
the well-greased far-flung cam-
paign machine headed by Mar land
will "deliver" in the next week and
on election day
Another factor which has helped
the Governor but which can not be
measured is his old-age pension
bills to be voted upon July 7 The
Administration plans a smash last-
minute drive of "Vote for Mar land
and Pensoins" The psychology of
this drive may garner thousands of
votes for Mar land-
They ire releasing a campaign
mode of the Governor throughout
the State and bearing down on the
pro-Roosevelt sentiments claimed by
Governor Marland
If they can make these things
click they may shove Marland into
the runoff At present he appears
to be trailing Lee
The picture: '
Gore—Definitely leading in 20
counties which polled a combined
Democratic vote of 100850 in the
1934 election
Lee—Leading in 15 counties which
had a Democratic vote of 77139 in
1934
Mar land—Leading in eight of the
counties surveyed These counties
polled 52582 Democratic votes two
years ago -
Smith—An unpredictable quan-
tity shown leading in only three of
more than forty counties but many
editors indicating that his potential
strength is not clearly delineated
A recent United Press survey ind1-1
cated Townsendites were more vo-
cal than numerous that his best
support came from the Veterans of
Industry
Mar land aided by Corporation
Commissioner Jack Walton has
been "taking over" many Townsend
groups In a survey completed a
month ago Smith waslisted as lead-
ing four counties
Consider this factor as t-hown by
the editors' reports:
Mar land has been making the
best gains recently in 15 counties
Lee in 13 and in probably half-
dozen the two are fighting neckand-neck
battle to take over the

THE COUNTY UNIT SCHOOL BILL
Marrs Marshall and
vote Gore has shown recent gains
In only three counties—Garvin
(shared with Lee) Cotton and No-
wata Smith has gained in Paine (with
Mar land) Pawnee Latimer Flits
Major Stephens Texas and Oar-
lied counties
Marland is showing gains in Cus-
ter Grant man Murray Caddo
Latimer McCurtain Seminole Ot-
tawa Adair Garfield Muskogee
Woods Alfalfa McClain and Pon-
totoc counties
I Lee has been climbling in Cleve-
land Garvin Atoka Wagoner Kay
Blaine Caddo Rogers Haskell Har-
mon Okfuskee Jackson Kiowa
Beaver and Oklahoma counties
Most gains have been "medium"
and one thing is clearly shown—no
candidate has developed a sudden
tidal wave of support It simply is
not in the picture today
A further factor: Marland has a
second-place position according to
State editors in 12 counties—Grant
Tillman Murray Atoka Wagoner
Cotton Latimer Nowata Pontotoc
Haskell Beaver and Craig
Lee is runnerup in eight counties
—Jefferson BlaMe McCur-
rtain Rogers Adair Jackson and
Stephens
Gore is second in Cleveland Gar-
vin Ellis Major Muskogee Woods
and Alfalfa counties
Smith was listed as running sec-
ond in Payne Pawnee Seminole
Harmon Ottawa Texas Mayes and
Washington
Gore Marland and Smith are bat-
tling on fairly even terms for sec-
ond place in Custer County Mar-
land and Lee in Garfield This sit-
uation prevails in a number of other
counties
Editors ranked Gore Lee and
Marland third in the respective
counties:
Gore—Murray Kay Latimer Has-
kell Seminole Adair Harmon Ot-
tawa Texas McClain Beaver and
May
Tillman Wagoner Cotton Pon-
totoc Woods and Craig
Marland—Cleveland Garvin Mc-
Curtain Blaine Payne Pawnee Ma-
jor Rogers Ellis Okfusliee Alfalfa
and Washington
Barring an unprecedented upset
Gore appears a safe bet for the run-
off Politicians generally concede that
Marland leads in Carter County
where a heavy vote lies and that
Canadian County lies between Gm
and Marland while Gore and Lee
ar battling for the No 1 post in
Grady
As the zero hour approaches when
voters go "over the top" to the polls
Gore's vote is firmly established
Marland's depends upon his pension
