Who was Who?
By LOUISE M COMSTOCK
THE PRISONER OF CHILLON
OVER 300000 visitors per year ato
the guide will tell you now tread
1 gayly tho very dungeon in which Lord
Byron's "Prisoner of Chilton" once lan-
guished gaze casually at its seven an-
cient pillars and pass on out into the
sunny beauty of Lake Leman at Mon-
treux Switzerland unaware perhaps
that the prisoner whose prison they
have Just quit was as real as the dun-
geon itself
Francois de Bonnivard who lived
between 1496 and 1570 was a Swiss
patriot In 1510 he was made prior
of St Victor near Geneva and later
aided the Genevese against the op-
pressions of the duke of Savoy For
this he was captured and imprisoned
by the duke for two years Some time
after his release Bennivard fell by
chance into the hands of robbers who
sold him to the duke for gold This
time he was cast into the famous dun-
geon under the waters of Lake Leman
in the Castle of Chilton where he
remained from 1520 to 1536 when he
was liberateu by the Genevese who
rewarded his heroism with a pension
and honored him when he died
The Swiss government has today re-
stored and housecleaned the Castle
of Chilton modernizing the famous old
fortress much to the distress of the
sentimental who like their Byron but
the dungeon itself remains damp and
dark and the very "seven pillars of
Gothic mold" to which Bonnivard was
chained still stand carved with the
names of Byron and also of Victor
Hugo Dumas Dickens Meredith and
Shelley!

A ORM WAR
YARNS
LIEUT FRANK E HAGAN
0000OP0140400440)40
"Duration"—Four Hours
It wasn't a very long war for Amens
lea—from April 6 1917 to November
11 1018—a total of one year seven
months and five days Only one other
major conflict in which the United
States has been concerned was shorter
—the 114-day Spanish-American war
of 1808 But any of the millions who
served through Chateau Thierry Sole-
sons and the Argonne will tell you
that "it was plenty long enough"
However that doesn't Include Vasil
Papadkopullo
Vasil according to War department
records spent exactly four hours In
the American army making the world
safe for democracy Vasil was an
Albanian immigrant who joined up at
11:80 o'clock on the historical morn-
ing of November 11 1918 Part of his
war service consisted of standing In
line mess kit in hand to receive his
allotment of chow and eating it (pos-
sibly half an hour) and the remain-
der was spent in working with a
shovel At 3:30 p m he was told
that the war was over and was then
and there given an honorable diet
