Mother Can't Be Father
As Well to Her Children
By MRS MURIEL LAWRENCE
They sat at a table in the big expensive roadhouse on the out-
skirts of one of our most expensive exurbs The father might have
been a rkina youna TV or advertising executive The mother in
her trickily simple red linen sheath was slim as a high fashion
model and wore the some look of bored disdain
But when she turned that look on the exuberant little boy beside
her who wanted more block olives it had no effect at all When
she removed the relish dish saying "No you've had enough" he
reached over to his sister's plate and arabbed her olives
In her cool overcnntrolled voice his mother said "Stuart you
heard what I said Give the dives back to Melinda"
He shoved them into his mouth
I thought "oh young mother why don't you open that care-
fully lipsiicked mouth of your and cry to your husband: "Bill
help met Sit on Stuart! Subdue him! I'm so fashionably thin that
my sitting on him makes no impression Indeed Bill I only seem
to be sophisticated self-sufficient certain of all the answers—and
am really tinable to father our children for you Squash Stuart
dear Bill and I'll never quote Doctors Spock or Gesell to you
again so help me!'"
She didn't say this of course So what happened 'was family
surrencli2r The bright young executive father at a nod of deci-
sion from his wife unti-d the napkin from Stuart's neck Slipping
a bill to the bewildered waiter he meekly followed wife and
children to their patked car and home where Stuart I can only
presume was served more olives
I don't know how we women got stuck with this awful obliga-
tion to appear so independent so self-assured so superior to any
need for Knbandly strength and co-operation in the discipline of
children
How we got stuck with it doesn't matter if we could just register
our resentment el it We seem unable to We just brood smoke
and drink too much get headaches and divorces imagining were
mad at everything but the one thing that really gripes us—the
obligation to play fatherto cur husbands' children
So fooled by our front of self-efficiency our men have got to
feeling uncertain insufficient Joining us in parental surrender
they leap to our nod of decision—and follow us obediently out of
the restaurant instead of staying there helping to quell Stuart and
enjoying a Clic roast beef dinner

NEW vonK iurj1 — High fre-

TV and FM radio stimulate the
"whole" human body into de-
fending itself against infections
and other ailments a medical re-
search symposium was told Fri-
day The tellers were adherents of
the theory pioneered by Dr Abra-
ham J Ginsberg of New York
since 1936 that these waves in
themselves (arid not the internal
heat they produce) have a bene-
ficial efr'rrct on the whole body
The listeners were several hun-
dnd invited physicians
It was the newest effort of the
Dr Ginsberg foundation to "sell"
the medical :profession in general
You must understand there is
no suggestion that the TV and ra-
dio waves which are relatively
new additions to our atmophere
have been silently improving our
health These are special waves
radiated into the body by a spe-
cial machine of Gin berg's in-
vention They're the short and in-
tense waves of the high side of
the frequency range but they're
"square - topped" to give maxi-
mum effectiveness inside the body
and they're delivered in pulses of
a thomanchh-of-a-second duration
Permits Cell Hest
The pauses between pulses can
be made much longer than the
pulses which permits the internal
cells to "rest" between sthnula-
tion by the bursts of electrical en-
ergy that can be brought up to
a maximum peak of 1333 watt It
also prevents the accumulation of
in body heat
