Mike Todd's Party
For 18000 Turns
Oul Garbled Affair
By WILLIAM GLOVER
NEW YORK lf! — Mike Todd
party giver extraordinary takes
a boat ride today to explain what
happened last night
His ballyhooed “lnimAte’’ gath-
ering for 18000 chums he admits
ran into a few “unforeseen diffi-
culties” The show televised in part to a
nationwide audience was a hodge-
podge of blaring bands prancmg
ponies deadspots and flying
frankfurters that Broadway won’t
soon forget
“We’ve been had”'-commented
one veteran showman as the
guests a glitter cross-section of
the entertainment world and cafe
society moved through the exits
of Madison Square Garden
Many left soon after the formal
program ended at 11 pm but
other thousands of the restless
fidgety throng lingered to dance
and partake of a strange buffet
of pizza pies doughnuts ice
cream beer champagne and hot
dogs
“The whole spirit-of the idea
tonight is to have fun” he pro-
claimed “We had a few unfore-
seen difficulties Mavbe they add-
ed to the carnival spirit
’ I hoped things would run
smoother But some nights are
better than others”
-Beside him as he spoke was his
wife film star Elizabeth Taylor
who presided at the cutting of the
ast pink birthday cake which
stood in the center of the arena
floor
The celebration was a first an-
nnersarv tribute to "Around the
World in 80 Days” the first pic-
ture showman Todd eier made
It won fne Hollywood oscars
$25 Picture is Rembrandt Worth $150000
LONDON 0B f— Two art experts
announced today a portrait bought
for $25 half a century ago is a
Rembrandt which may be worth
5150000 or more
The picture was found by art
restorer Reg Winder while exam-
ining canvases owned by the late
Maj Hubert C Corlette

Camera Gets
Sun Pics at
83200 Feet
MINNEAPOLIS — Scientists
today awaited the chance for a
new closeup look at the sun in
8000 pictures taken by a balloon-
borne camera at 83200 feet yes-
terday Dr Martin Schwarzschild head-
ing the stratoscope project
termed it an outstanding success
after the huge camera was para-
chuted safely 20 miles southeast
of Blue Earth Minn
The 35mm film exposed at the
rate of one per second are being
processed in a University of Min-
nesota laboratory
The balloon with its nearly
th’-ce-quarter-ton cargo of appa-
ratus was launched from Huron
SD
Dr Schwarzschild Princeton
University astronomer said the
project is providing valuable in-
formation for possible satellite
launchings The camera achieves
clarity through being free of 95
per cent of the earth's atmospher-
ic haze
Winder and his partner Stewart
Goodall said the painting is un-
questionably a portrait by Rem-
brandt of his wife Saskia whom
he painted many times They said
X-ray and ultraviolet tests showed
a Rembrandt signature under an
overlay of paint in one corner
and proved that the canvas itself
is at least 300 years old
John Corlette the major’s son
said the picture had long been a
family joke because his father al-
ways insisted it was an undis-
covered Rembrandt The major’s
wife picked it up at a London auc-
tion in 1905
Corlette said he has insured the
portrait for 30000 pounds $84000)
and will offer it for sale if a panel
of experts agree with Winder and
GoodaD that is a Rembrandt
Few Have Actually
Seen Russ 'Moon'
CAMBRIDGE Mass ifi — Dr
Armand N Spitz coordinator of
visual observation for Project
Moonwatch says there have been
no more than 10 actual sight-
ings of the Russian satellite from
stations in the Tree world
He said last night the Smith-
sonian Astrophysical Observatory
lacks sightings from the Southern
Hemisphere where there are
Moonwatch stations in South Afri-
ca Australia Chile Peru and
Netherlands West Indies
From that entire area only the
Australian station reported sight-
ing the satellite rather than the
easier - to - see rocket which
launched it into space
