Men Struggle Clear
No other vehicle was involved in
the terrible accident and no de-
tails were available as to the cause
of the tragedy The truck was mov-
ing west out of Stratford on SH 19
Approximately five miles west of
Stratford tracks indicated the truck
angled off the paving and plunged
headlong into a deep ditch on the
5outh side of the road It burst into
flamea almost immediately
One man who lived near t h e
wreck scene said the two men
managed to striggle clear of the
burning cab and crawled up the
ditch to the shoulder partially on
the paving
A passerby saw them lying only
a short distance from the burning
truck and help was summoned from

Cattle Buns
Flames from burning gasoline
ignited pasture near the truck arid
units from Paulo Valley and Strat-
ford sped to the scene to fight the
fire Eventually the flames were
brought under control but the that-
red wreckage still smouldered at

Cattle were jammed together in
the cab end of the big double-decker
trader It was impossible to tell
how many head died It was
thought the truck carried upwards

In spite of the crash and raging
flames some of the cattle stild liv-
ed Farmer o and ranchers in the
area descended on the scene and
did what they could to remove liv-
ing stock from the wreckage
Sight Sickening
It was a sickening sight Although
some of the cattle still lived it
would have been more merciful
had they died Freed from the
wreckage they stood dumbly in
the highway hides partially burned
away blackened and burned with
long strips of red skin barging
from their bodies
A few wandered blindly about
their eyes destroyed be the flames
And others removed from the
wreckage tried to pull themselves
upright and walk on shattered legs
A representative from the truck-
ing company was speeding to the
wreck scone to make some ar-
rangements for the few head that
survived the crash
Workers at the scene dispatched
a message to the sheriffs office
asking that someone with authority
be sent out to shoot the most ter-
rible injured stock to put them out
of their misery Many of the cat-
tle charred and smoke blackened
wandered back and forth across the
highway constituting a serious
traffic menace
Arrangements were finally made
to pen and hold the stock that could

had no idea what caused the accident
